A couple of tips to reduce your premium..

Post by Jeremy » Sat Nov 19, 2011 11:40 am

I have just gone through the pain of renewing the car insurance and tried a couple of money saving tips that a friend passed to me and they worked so I thought I would post them up on here in case it can save someone else a few quid :)

1. Don't say you are going to garage your car, say it will be parked offroad on a driveway. Bizzarely it's more expensive if you say it's going to be garaged every night!

2. Tweak your occupation - there are usually 2 or 3 generic job descriptions that your job could legitimately fall under. Try tweaking your job description, but dont tell a blatant lie of course.

3. Add your Mum onto the policy. Mine is dead so not an option but I'm assured that 8 times out of 10 that brings the premium down.

4. Once you've jotted down the top 6 quotes, have a trawl through Quidco and topcashback to see if any of these insurers are giving a kickback. Sometimes a more expensive quote can suddenly become the cheapest with the help of £100 cashback through Quidco.

Using 1 and 2 above saved me £60. Using 4 saved me another £40. So £100 better off compared the my first quote from the price comparison sites for very little effort.

Hope this can be of use to someone.

Point number 1 - just checked that myself and driveway was £90 cheaper than in the garage and saying its left on the street works out at £110 cheaper than being in a garage!! I know where I'd rather leave it :|

Top tip though wouldnt have thought about trying that

I just can't comprehend that! What's the thinking behind it being the cheaper option?

I noticed that too, cost me an extra £40 to garage it.

I think the thinking behind it is that it gives someone a bit more cover/privacy to work on trying to break in or get it to start or whatever. Never mind the fact you've got to actually break into the garage in the first place though.....

I seem to remember a big deal being made of Escort (or could have been Sierra) Cosworth insurance in the nineties and that they were increasing costs for people who garaged them because it gave thiefs time to work on the 'sophisticated' immobiliser system without being spotted.

Is it not to do with the fire risk? A garage fire is an 'extra' risk on top of the normal risks - loads of paint tins, cans of fuel, rubbish, and a a gas boiler no doubt in the average one!

I thought it maybe had something to do with folk scraping their cars whilst reversing in or out of the garage ?

Or, is it just some kind of scam to rape the wallets of unsuspecting careful car owners trying to do the right thing ? Nah couldn't possibly be, insurance companies would never indulge in such behaviour :blackeye

Logic seems to go out of the window when you're dealing with these guys.

Those two points make a lot of sense, especially the fire risk one.

It will just be a statistical anomaly that means they've had more claims for sports cars being stolen from a garage than from outside on the street. Strangely even in my post code (which is normally on fire) its cheaper for me to insure the vx on the street and in my mythical garage.
i3s, Volvo and more pushbikes than strictly necessary.

....did i ever tell you about the Evora and VX220 i used to own?

It's not just sports cars though Martin, both my diesel rep-mobiles are cheaper to insure if I keep them outside.

So what would happen if you insured your car as being on the driveway when in fact you garaged it overnight and it were to suffer a mishap or get stolen from the garage, would the insure refuse to pay out ?

If it has a mishap you were planning on working on it.

If it was nicked then it was on the street...

So, what happens if you insure it to be kept on your driveway, but then put in into your garage?... IF something happened in the garage, would it still be covered? :?

Is the wording not often 'where is your car usually stored at night'?
