Split General Chat Forum?

Post by Shug » Thu Jun 05, 2008 9:48 am

Should we split the General Chat forum into two?

One for Lotus Related Chat

One for Off Topic Chat

I don't think there's merit in deleting any other forums - announcements has a place and I certainly don't think technical should be absorbed into Lotus chat. Those with differing views can make their point in this thread...

Viewpoints are that splitting the drivel away from the on-topic chat will cut down surfing time for people, flipside is that some interesting off topic threads could be missed by members. If we keep the single forum, the use of NLC (No Lotus Content) suffixes will be more closely enforced.

You will be taken outside and shot......

More likely a mod will add the NLC tag and ridicule you in the post

I use the New Posts view (http://www.scottishelises.com/phpbb/sea ... d=newposts) and the forum name here is tiny, so I tend to scan the list by topic title. NLC tag is really useful for this. Although I read (and contribute drivel to) the NLC crap too, so I won't lose out either way...

I read everything, do not find it onerous, so am quite happy as is. However I would not on something the size of SELOC. I reckon ours is about right.

As most of you sit at work all day reading it anyway, there should be no problem.

In fact compared to organising tt's and Speed Fair, tis quite relaxing.

ps I realise that this is the democratic way of doing this, and I entirely agree, as long as everybody else agrees with my opinion.

pss cannot believe that the word "onerous" has never been used on the Forum before, even as an adjective.

Just shows how polite we are to one another.

Personally i am not bothered, read pretty much anything me, however i guess it would benefit those that don't get long to log in and check posts, however my fear is it might 'dilute the banter!'

:withstupid

I think members with little log on time will maybe prefer a split general chat. But how many mambers really have a limited time? Most of us(i assume) sit at work and look on here, paid to look at Scottish Elises, perfect

And from most new topics, you kind of know by the heading as to wether or not its Lotus contend or just random drivel.

Just my 2p....

Good idea I think, especially as NLC in the titles probably doesn't get used enough (and I'm as guilty as anyone here). Quite a few web forums seem to do this. A 'random banter' or 'bar room' section, then a general chat section for anything else that is vaguely on subject.

There's more drivel in general chat than lotus chat just now I reckon.... and when you think that in another year or 2 years time, when there are many many more new members, chances are that ratio is probably only going to get worse.....

maybe we should be marking certain posts LC instead of NLC...

It's fine leave it as it is, too many sections kill small forums and everybody just ends up posting in the wrong section anyway.

Is it really the neccessary to label everything NLC? How long does it take to open a thread and decide if its drivel* or not, the majority of the time the thread title should provide enough information to decide whether you want to view or contribute.

*drivel - I have heard the word mentioned a lot recently when refering to this place. If it doesn't interest you, you dont have to read it! Having a rigid lotus and technical threads only policy creates a sterile and formal atmosphere, there is nothing wrong with a bit of banter and chat between friends provided its in the right place.

It's a good compromise. It worked well on SE1 most of the time. If we stay single forum for that, I think it's not too much to ask to keep those with less time happy.

Opening 1 thread you dont' want to read (bear in mind, some folks titles (Sanj) can be cryptic) doesn't take time - opening 10 does.

don't know why, but for some reason it hacks me off..... as does the thought of being told off for not doing it...

It makes sense I suppose when the odd post isn't relevant, but when the majority are not LC, what's the point?!?

I've also been listening to radio 4 a bit lately..... am I turning into a grumpy old man???
