Definition of a "tut".
There seems to be some confusion amongst our newer members as to what a "tut" is, so with the indulgence of the mods, please allow me to clarify.
The "tut"
Many moons ago there was concern raised that seemingly harmless comments made in the pub-like atmosphere of internet chatrooms may lead to prosecution, especially if these comments implied law breaking. It was argued quite extensively that such comments could be disowned by claiming they were boastful exaggerations until a more elegant solution was hit upon.
All speeds would be referred to as "tuts", in honour of the group's eponymous member.
Now this is not to say that the Tut is prone to exagerration, although he has led an unusual life he is no braggart. The name derives from a period Tut (for clarity I shall capitalise when referring to his Tutness, and use lower case otherwise) spent chasing enlightenment in the mountainess roads in what back then was Albania but is now part of Scotland.
Tut was the first of an order of motoring monks who set aside all worldly pleasures, material goods and shoes in order to devote themselves to driving perfection… ( I realise that those that do not know Tut may find this story a little difficult to believe but pictures do exist within the archive of Tut back in those days with a couple of Nuns of the order, wearing their characteristic simple dress and beautific smiles. Tut continues to drive barefoot to this day.).
And focused they were - for two years through wind and hail, sun and shine, they concentrated on one thing, one 37 km stretch of mountain pass. Faster and faster they went each day getting closer to that one run where every corner went right, were every braking point was nailed. One early morning Tut left the tent, fired up the Hispano Suiza with one turn of the handle, and roared around the loop at 100 tuts.
The perfect run.
Thus a tut is defined, not as a measure as something as vulgar as simple speed, but as a measure of driving perfection. Technically as 1% of the maximum achievable velocity for any given part of road, adjusted for driver skill, vehicle, prevailing speed limit and road conditions. (The actual formula is in the excel spreadsheet in the documents section).
Usage
"...coming out of the tunnel I was approaching 72 tuts"
This suggests quite an honest appraisal of the driver's ability, 72 tuts is eminently achievable, most of the slower groups on road runs drive between 60-75 tuts, the faster groups climb into the mid eighties.
There was a 91 recorded last summer by Nizzy, just before he hit a bit of the scenery. Tenk saw 91 before he too suffered from a car-wall interface failure. Even his Tutness only occasionally glimpses 90s these days, Shug often claims to get into the mid 90s but Ali tested his tutometer last month and it’s over-reading by 17%.
"...I was using all the road utterly committed, must have been 97-98 tuts."
Unlikely to be honest, unless the road mentioned was their own stomping ground. Sounds like bravado, could be true for maybe one corner, or one braking point, but not for a whole run.
"...flat out on the straight 140 tuts..."
Idiot. You can't do 140 tuts, anymore than the footballer can give 101%.
Obviously this is just my understanding, based on the Tirana Accord of 1933, which although widely accepted is by no means exhaustive. There are still some who apply the Copenhagen Variation (named after the famous conference of '73 where some internet standards were set), but they left to form Scottish 7s - so named because they work in base 7.
Splitters.
I hope this helps and again thank the mods for their indulgence and Tut for his commitment.

Re: Definition of a "tut".
Brilliant post Pete, but whats more would seem to cover most of the occasions when "tuts" has been used, and outsiders could have got the wrong idea and thought that it was some sort of one to one regarding speed measurement.

I realised a lot of folk may have become confused, we should probably attempt to have it formally rationalised and entered into wikipedia.tut wrote:Brilliant post Pete, but whats more would seem to cover most of the occasions when "tuts" has been used, and outsiders could have got the wrong idea and thought that it was some sort of one to one regarding speed measurement.

Do you have any of the photos from when you were under monasitc orders Tut with which to illustrate the post? I seem to remember one of you with a couple of the nuns next to the ceremonial well (easily confused with a swimming pool to the uninitiated!!).

Re: Definition of a "tut".
Not sure which one it was Pete, but I have this one where I was persuaded by two off duty Omani Nuns to join the Monastic order.

As you can see from the all male content, this was morning prayers outside the Monastry on our first day of initiation.

And this was just before I was removed from the Order of the Robe for smuggling in a Playboy magazine.

I think that I was on sentry duty here and was attacked by a Buddhist Monk..........

Cheers
