My new RS...(NLC)

Post by Fluoxetine » Tue Aug 10, 2010 8:52 pm

...Minus the 'GT3' bit, unfortunately...

Been looking around for a fun shed - Initially at a powerful M Way barge (think - Audi S8 / E39 540i etc), but would like to drive again at KH before I forget which way the track goes (haven't driven there since 2004!), so something more dual purpose was sought.

Minimal budget / a Mr Boag ~ VX Jon attitude to 'spending over the odds' , meant a long journey looking at various sheds (plus nice cars which I didn't want to spend money on... :P )

E34 M5 with 160k on the clock for £3k? B5 Audi S4 with 140k on the clock for similar?

Then common sense actually kicked in, for a change...(Cheers Mr Boag / Kevham for the advice).

Picked this up last night:

It's an 1800 RS (Hence the post title! :P )

RS means it's an import, but better spec'd than a UK car - 6 speed box / Torsen LSD / Bilsteins / higher rev limiter etc etc.

Needs a little cosmetic TLC, but very solid where it counts and has the factory hardtop, which is nice.

Bits are cheap as chips, so looking forward forward to sorting the suspension / brakes etc - Should be fun at Knockhill, and I'm looking forward to doing the odd SIDC day / Dreadnought night for the first time in around six years!

(And I'll do a sideline in haircuts, to conform to the stereotype...  )

Be good to see some of the regulars I haven't seen in years - And to meet some of the newer members from the list... :thumbsup

Good choice :thumbsup

My dad has an old Mk2 in a particularly unappealing goldy/orangey colour, he loves it though :)

It's funny - I only really wanted something (preferably) RWD and light for a return to trackdays, but it's actually an amusing thing to punt along... :)

And I believe they take a supercharger rather well too!

Nice choice mate.

When is your next time off, can you drag it all the way up here for some camping nonsense?!

boooo. I was reading this on my phone with images turned off, and read MK2, 1800 RS, LSD and had convinced myself you had bought an old skool ford escort. Bit dissapointed to see the pictures now, but still, looks great, and they're great fun to drive. Definitely SC it though :D

Neil, even without pictures you should have known it wasn't a Mk2 Escort - it's an import .... (I don't think even the Mexico actually came from Mexico .. might be wrong though!).

Cheers,
Robin

the mk2 escort was waaaaaay before my time, i had no idea where they were made. I assumed as they were rare and exclusive, they must have been imports. :D

Mk2 escorts were about as rare, in their day, as the Focus is now ....

Cheers,

even the RS?? Is it just that they've mostly rotted away now hence being quite valuable nowadays??

I believe the Mexico was to commemorate Ford's success in rally Mexico?

As for Mk2 Escorts being rare, the RS ones were built in lower numbers than all the cooking variants, kind of like the Escort Cossie, original Focus RS, etc, were.

But such was their rallying prowess - Colin McRae had one in his modern-day collection - that finding any Mk2 shell and rebuilding it into one of the early rally examples probably carries quite a lot of kudos.

I think our very own John Stewart had a Mk2 Escort with some trick bits on it...he may be along in a minute to 'fess up ;-)

PS - to hear you talk of Mk2 Escorts as "waaaaay before my time" does actually underline how old I am
