Tories call election to increase majority and lose majority.

Power driven incompetence.

Not a bad GE result overall (although I'm more nervous about Brexit now), and a bit more representative of the actual votes for parties (especially in Scotland) rather than the SNP mass we had before.

Yep. ALthough I'd agree with your earlier post, this feels more representative, I think the SNP landslide was a glitch.

The 2015 SNP result was, as we all really know, a case of the majority of former Yes voters turning out en-masse and voting for the SNP, were as the No's retreated to apathy a touch and split their vote over 2 / 3 parties.

The SNP vote share has gone from ~49% in 2015 to ~37% in 2017, even against a background of a supposed 'Hard Tory Brexit', lending evidence that Scots main priority is to reject the notion of Indyref2, not the Brexit process / deal. I would say I agree with your point about May over-playing her hand over an increased majority and back-firing, but Sturgeon in a very similar situation over Indyref2.

I am not a Corbyn fan at all, but I'm encouraged on a resurgence of Labour, especially in Scotland.

Yeah, I think the last one was a vote against Labour's very negative behaviour in indyref. Likewise about Corbyn, although he has done way better than I expected in this election, I think that's more a reflection on the appalling performance of May (it's not that insightful of me to say May's overplyed her hand. She's a disaster.)

Takes a lot to make Cameron look effective.

As they say, leaders don't win elections, they lose them.

Well that has been a long night.

Who'd of thunk it, the Scottish Conservatives being the group that has flung a lifeline to the national party.

At least we did our bit locally but there was a lot of discontent from supporters about the national campaign and policies. Many were wondering if Mrs May was trying to throw the election to avoid doing brexit.............

I think by sticking to his traditional labour values Jeremy Corbyn put out a message people could understand as well as using the old trick of bribing people with their own money or money taken from the 'rich'.

The SNP were never going to repeat the 2015 result but are paying the price for their poor handling of education, NHS, policing in Scotland and centralisation of power.

We are having a post-mortem next week, could be messy.

Interesting times.

Malcolm
