Rebuilding The Shed (formerly aka the Shugmobile)

Post by SteveJB » Wed Aug 19, 2015 10:56 pm

After 15 years of service it seemed like a good time to do a bit of an overhaul of the old girl and luckily a mate has a garage and has enough patience(but not sure how long!)to help out. Decided to take engine out and get some work done on it and whilst it's out, may as well renew/repair whatever needs done.

On a limited budget so I'll be posting pics etc as I go along and looking for advice/opinions on what to do, how to do it and what to buy including where to source parts. just worked out how to up. Probably everything from engine internals to go for to the paintjob! (Once the front clam ding is fixed). As of last week the car looked like this. Shows of my new nitrons well don't you think?!Will post up more pics shortly.

Started looking through the bits to replace and the first thing that jumped out was the clutch. Almost flush with the bolts so thats the first part ordered.

Next to look at is whether there is anyone out there doing fixing kits for refitting the clams. First problem is that the holes on the clams have widened over the years and the plastic washers are done. My first thought was whether additional structure was needing to be bonded on then redrill the holes & use bigger washers to spread the forces.

Second problem to consider is where the front clam fixes to the like of the bottom of the door. Has anyone else had similar problems or seen a posting on it?

Mine had a plastic spacer / plate cut to the shape of the sill where the clam sits on it - only on one side of the car though :scratch Personally, I don't worry about the panel gaps too much - as long as everything is working. :thumbsup

Ooft. Clutch went in with the gearbox at about 90odd thousand miles. Unless you've whacked on another 90k, I'd avoid a helix clutch...

Really looking forward to seeing under the skin of the old girl again.

I take it helix is just the manufacturer name rather than something unusual?

Not had the joy of replacing a Rivnut to secure body panels, but the spacing is usually only a stack of washers. As Dom says, not always symetrical.

Yep - just the manufacturer - standard pattern, supposedly a bit more heavy duty. Standard should be fine though.

I was kindly gifted some spare 2 part marine paint so decided to tidy up the upper/lower wishbones, struts and anything else that I got carried away on. Unfortunately my enthusiasm is more that my competence and speed so my mate ended up working behind me to chase me up and give me the appropriate level of abuse.

Initially they looked like this....
Image

Offered the use of various power tools to take the paint off ready to add primer and super hardwearing new black paint. First job was to prepare the wishbones etc without injuring myself!!
Image
Job done! if a bit slow. Time for lunch.

Next job to get the primer on. Schoolboy error in getting almost as much on my hands as on the car. 3 days later and still got some one my hands after daily wire brush and thinner action.
Image

Too *%~@!! slow so mate ended up sticking on the black paint(which was probably a blessing considering the state of my hands just with the primer)

First shiny shiny. Great work! Doesn't matter how pampered your S1, the roll bar stays are always naff. :-)
