I'm going for 2nd hand and attempting to fit myself, I think the belt is snapped so it won't be charging at all. Replacing the jeep alternator has give me the confidence to attempt the elise ( although the jeep had a wiring problem in the end and alternator was fine)

This is the OEM alternator I got a year or two ago. Not the cheapest at £170 ish but they do the S2 vesrion as well which looks identical but is £50 less. There is possibly a good reason for the 30% price difference?

Like Stephen explained, mine had a cracked casing. Also the belts can have almost the same part number but different shaped teeth - if that makes sense. I imagine the one Stephen is pointing out is correct. Unlike the one I got from my local parts shop.

Just to update this...

I fitted a second hand alternator which I couldn't get to run correctly, kept giving me voltage issues at high revs.

I then scoured ebay and found a bench tested mgf 85amp which seems to be working well. It cost £40 but looks refurbished. Marelli.

It's not that difficult a job, just awkward. Thanks for the advice on here which gave me the confidence to attempt it!

Keep the old one and stick a new rectifier pack in it.

From my vast experience with S1 alternators, i would spend the cash, an buy a genuine s1 part, or have it converted to g he better S2 one. It is worth it, my 160 chewed up and spat out over a dozen refurbed sh*t ones in 2 years, waste of money, an time.

The original marelli one lasted 14 years and 60k+ miles. What killed it and the the one I just removed was the car sitting too long and it seizing. It lives outdoors and occasional use isnt good for it. My own fault rather heat shield issue which I think kills a lot of them.

Having a week old baby changes financial priorities so £40 vs £200 for a new one was an easy decision.if I'm back buying a new one in under a year it'll have been a bad decision!

Robin, this IS a quality part - see my previous post (which I've re-quoted below for ease) the only issue being it's a 65A not an 85A. It is NOT a cheap Chinese alternator.

there is an eBay seller that does them pretty cheap. New (well reconditioned but they all are..) Denso recon'd unit (mine was in a denso box but is a magnetti marelli alternator) for about 70 quid

I'd have though 65A should be plenty for the Elise..

I guess I'll feedback in a few months once I've used the car a bit.

So is it "NEW" as per the ad, or is it recon'd? Either way, just 'cos it says Magnetti Marelli on it doesn't mean it is.

Here's the question - if this really were a "NEW" alternator as advertised for 70 quid that would imply that the margin from the UK distributor to retail is of the order of 70%. Or this part isn't from the same factory that makes the £200 parts.

I've no problem with people buying and fitting these alternators, but I have my doubts that they are "NEW" and even that they are genuine factory parts reconditioned (vs clone parts).

UJI is on its 2nd alternator. I think the first one shook itself to death after a bolt sheared. Current one was £45 cash at Club Lotus Festival Donnie, circa 2006. Think it said Marelli on it and I think Robin "helped" me fit it (ie, I passed him a few spanners!)
