Just fitted one size down to our SEAT for that very reason. Apparently the done thing for winters.

16" wheels are cheaper on eBay too. They are also more pot hole resistant due to the bigger tyres side wall.

Going against the grain as only second hand wheels that I could find locally at a decent price for the Mk1 TT were 18"

However ordered some Goodyear Eagle Gen-1 from BlackCircles (Autotrader Tyre test: http://www.autoexpress.co.uk/accessorie ... n-1-review) for £109 per corner so the alloys are across to CMC next week to get them fitted.

Tried getting the Continentals/Pirelli's and could not find the latest variant anywhere where the Nokian's were an extra £10 per tyre.

However I am sure that last week the tyres were cheaper and will probably be more expensive once the cold weather hits.

I need 103 load rated ones for my transporter. Not sure if that bumps up the price. I'll have a search. Cheers

Also try openeo as noticed they do good prices but never ordered through them

For others reading this..
I'm sure no one will, but if you're considering going a size down, check they will fit! A few years back, plenty of websites recommended dropping an inch on my Seat Leon Cupra for winters - the problem was that there was absolutely NO WAY a smaller wheel would clear the front calipers!

Ended up buying a set of used Golf GTI alloys and running them in Winter. Didn't look too bad on it either

Also, sold them on for not much less than I paid, so it might be easier to convince lady folk that a 2nd set of wheels are appropriate - my advise would be to look for used genuine wheels over new 3rd party for resale value...

Hello there I may be able to help you with some brand new winter tyres the right size 225\45\17 make, DMACK. the Rally guys. they do a winter safe tyre and wears well even if used all year. give me a call on 07706690486 thanks Peter. ps had some on a Mk 7 GTD Golf and did well with them on it was on 225/40/18
