KH the "wrong way"

Post by Eric K » Wed Jul 27, 2016 9:43 am

Any tips or thoughts on driving KH ant-clockwise?

I have the British Sprint Championship round this weekend (intertwined with SLS) and the Saturday is the wrong way.

My first experience of going that way will be my first practice run on Saturday. :(

You won't have a lap to warm up the tyres though before going for it.

I've only done it once but two bits I remember...

The top of the hill at Duffus can be a bit unsettling. It drops off to your right at Clarks.

I've got a lot of experience of driving KH backwards, but only on clockwise trackdays. :D

Caterham specific advice would be to run a little more fuel as your pump is on the left side and will suffer surge earlier. Flows well, apart from Clarks, which needs care, and the chicane requires a late turn-in, but otherwise straightforward.

I found it difficult to find the right line coming off the hairpin down through Hislops heading towards Clarks - in the end I found that if I stayed to the left and then treated Hislops as an actual corner (not normally an issue going clockwise) you can line yourself up for Clarks.... picking a suitable braking point takes a bit of getting used to though as Clarks 'falls off' to the right as you go round the corner.
Another thing to note is the back straight seems much bumpier going anti-clockwise than it is coming the other way.

The chicane is, imo, much much better anti-clockwise and you can really gain some time through here once you have the confidence to just barrel through it. The racing line is easy to find here.

If you get the Scotsman right, your run up Duffus should be good as you can almost straight line Leslies for the run up the hill..... when I got to Duffus, I really had to be hard over the kerb to the left as I was carrying quite a bit of speed up the hill it would throw me *really* wide, almost into the pit exit/entrance.

I absolutely love the track anti-clockwise as it's a completely different track. Braking points aren't where I thought they would be and the lines through the corners are, obviously, completely different. I also found quite a few undulations in the track to avoid that I never noticed going the normal way.

Good luck!

Don't like anti-clockwise, I find that there is no flow to it.

Yes I'll be there both days, driving down early Saturday morning, staying at the City Hotel in Dunfermline on Saturday night (beer or two and a curry on the menu) and driving home Sunday evening.

Tut - Aren't you coming out to play on Tuesday night mate?

With regards to reverse Khockhill
With regards to reverse there are a few crucial it's to get correct and also if it's wet it's significantly harder, especially if you are in something rwd with significant power.

The approach to Clarks in reverse is tricky as you transition from a right hander to a left and need to brake through it. In the wet that can be a real battle. First time through the reverse chicane is also tricky but use your first pass to get some visual indicators of turn in.

Reverse duffus can be tricky and a few people have binned it at the top in the barriers towards he end of the usual pit exit. Again take a line to minimise the weight transfer and if wet be very careful when you pop on full power (if that's a concern). Use as much kerb as poss, but watch this doesn't upset the rear.

Last time I drove it was in the Atom which was awesome and bonkers
