Hotel Recommendations

Post by scottyf » Tue Jul 24, 2007 10:58 pm

Anyone got any recommendations for a decent hotel for the night?

Basically, the wife and myself are finallly managing to get away for the night without the kids for the first time in over a year.

Were looking for a hotel with a decent restaurant, swimming pool etc. so we can go and just chill out. Anywhere thats within a couple of hours drive (so we can maximise our chill time) would be considered.

Edinburgh seems to be fully booked with the fringe and the prices are through the roof. Thought about the McDonald Highland Resort in Aviemore, but feel were not being adventurous enough.

So anyone got any ideas or personal recommendations of where we can head???

Cheers

Hilton Craigendarroch at Ballater is lovely, and requires an inevitable crossing of the Cairnomount road ;-)

Further afield, the Royal Marine Hotel in Brora is also a long-standing fave of ours. Well worth the trip.

Isles of Glencoe hotel at Ballachulish is modern yet classy, and brilliantly run.

All of the above have pools, excellent restaurants, and access to nice countryside or driving routes should the missus allow that!

You lucky, lucky people :-)

Aye, it's middle of holiday season right enough...we usually book just outwith school hols, and get good availability and rates.

Though if you are using online tools to check avail, don't always trust them. A call to the hotel in the morning may reveal a cancellation, or they might even "waitlist" you :-)

Turnberry is normally a good bet, and you can get dinner packages, which include the 5 course meal - great place to chill, and if the weather plays the game so good walks around there too.

Gleneagles?

I've been to the Fairmount St Andrews when it was St Ands Bay. I got a mates rates deal but it does have all you're looking for, swimming pool, spa, etc and 2 resturaunts that are pretty top notch :)

There's the McDonald Cardrona down by Peebles, further to drive but again has the pool and spa and nice food.

Also - McDonald hotel in Aberfoyle does great mid-week deals (well it did in the off peak) which again has pool and lovely scenery... benefit there is you're 5 mins drive away from the Dukes Pass :D

Cameron House on Loch Lomond is also cracking, more pricey and further away :)

...Or you could always go to the Apex at City Quay

An away from it all, exclusive hotel, with full facilities and a small golf course, only one place fits that bill, Isle of Eriska Hotel A wee bit north of Oban. Not cheap, but if it's a treat.

I am looking to book a nice hotel in the centre of Edinburgh as a gift for friends. The Raddison looks just the ticket but I am not sure about parking. It is likely that they would be arriving by car. I would be booking at a 2 night stay for them (Fri & Sat). Does anyone know if the hotel has parking or if there is parking nearby and what the likely cost may be?

Thanks
Stewart

The SAS Radisson on the Royal Mile is good. I stayed there under its last name (Something Plaza?) and the parking was fine; undercover and barrier secured. Certainly it's off road, out of site and CCTV'd. Won't get much better from a leaving the car point of view. Two minutes walk from the carpark to hotel and the hotel location is perfect.

Hope that helps :D

Matt
Is the car parking part of a deal with the hotel. They don't have a flashy car so security isn't too much of an issue.
Thanks

Think it was a fiver extra per night or something? You need to book it up front if I remember as there's limited space

ETA:

Just checked - looks like its gone up a bit
131 Car Parking Space (Price: 8.50 GBP per 24 hours).
