Re: SIDC @ Knockhill, Saturday 13th May 2023 - 9am-1pm

I'll be returning to the trackday fold and hope to be there in the Caterham. It is the first time it has been out since 2020, so fingers crossed it all still works.

Re: Duratec in detail

Another 18 months has pasted and time for a final update . . . The car ran faultlessly all season (well almost, more below) and it scored maximum points in all the SLS rounds. That gave me joint 'King of the Hill' trophy for 2019. https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/50580919281_397cfc7d54_z.jpg But ...

Re: Duratec in detail

We did use some wool tufts in the tunnel and Simon suggested some copper grease with a little paraffin works well. But i think with such a poor aerodynamic shape as the Caterham, it is what happens 'off' the surface is the hardest thing to see.

Re: Duratec in detail

It is over a year since I last posted. That's not because there's been nothing happening, far from it, it was more that the engineering work on the engine came to a halt. It has proved to be reliable and the car went on to win the Super Lap Scotland Pro Class in 2018. https://live.staticflickr.com/6...

Re: SIDC - Saturday 23rd June, 9am to 1pm - Knockhill

Thank you John for organising this. I had forgotten how good the SIDC trackdays were, and perfect weather too. We had great time with Karen enjoying her first time driving on track. Thanks Kevin too, for taking her out and all the help you gave her before she took the plunge. Good to catch up with s...

Re: SIDC - Saturday 23rd June, 9am to 1pm - Knockhill

My daughter, Karen, will be doing this in the race Mini (only one seat). But it will be her first trackday and I was wondering if I could ask a favor of anyone willing to take her out for a few laps (without scaring her too much) just so she get the idea of lines, being overtaken, and track etiquett...

Re: Duratec in detail

I've taken some time to put together a website to support the Duratec in Detail's Facebook page. For those of you not familiar with the page, it blogs my Duratec engine builds. The site is not intended to replace the Facebook page, but I hope it will provide an index-able resource for those interest...

Re: Dash cams...

I've been using one in the van for a couple of years now. No particular incident made me get one, but I had been stopped by police a few time on the way home from work (early hours) and just felt that being in the car on my own most of the time, it would be some form of back up. Only ever review inc...

Re: Duratec in detail

Well, the engine held together for the SLS . . .

Clockwise

Much easier to drive it too.

So that concludes the story for the time being. . . who mentioned superchargers . . .

Re: Duratec in detail

With all the parts available, and balancing done, the assembly went ahead without problems. It's all covered in earlier posts, so I won't do it again. The engine started first time. Re: New PC - Antivirus Advice Please

I'd agree with Tut, no real need for 'extra' software these days as most operating systems are continually fixing any weaknesses. Why use all your processing power to detect a virus that ain't going to hurt you? I think a general awareness of PC health and cautious browsing habits are a better than ...

Re: Geek stuff

You often come across people who will quote figures to you that you know are just not true. It was something I learnt quite quickly with the Duratec builds and with the latest 2.5L engine, the article seems like a transcript of my discussion with Ultimate performance. Only by maintaining torque to a...

Re: Duratec in detail

A four cylinder inline engine is always going to be a compromise when it comes to balance. But it is worth getting the static balance correct as an error from one end of the crank to the other will 'rock', or bend, the crank and that's bad for the main bearings and longevity of the engine. With this...

Re: Duratec in detail

It was back to the 2.5L project this week after a month off in the States. The crate engine arrived and I had a fun day stripping it down. A few quality issues on this Mexican built engine, but nothing I can't deal with. 8hxuqvI7ESg It gave me my first opportunity to compare the cranks - the standar...
