Scottish Elises

I'm all out of clay bar and need to order some more.

In the past, I've always bought the Meguiars kit complete with the quick detailer spray but I now have a large collection of quick detailer and no clay bar, so I would like to buy just the clay bar on its own this time. And preferably a more 'industrial' sized bar of clay too, not the fun sized Mars bar variety.

Any tips on what to buy ? I've seen a few places advertising it in larger quantities but it seems to come in different grades. Means nothing to me, and I don't want to order anything too abrasive that's going to damage the paint.

I also have a US postal address that can be used to bring stuff in from the states if that widens the choice/lowers the price, which it usually does

I Have tried most of them now, finding the bilt hamber one ( link below ) to be really good. Its quite a mild clay but takes off any contaminents etc that I have had to remove.

Comes in a huge sized bar as per your request.....

And if you run out of detailing spray before clay, you can use water with this stuff. I Use a spray bottle with car wash as a lubricant finding it works really well.

Oh and another Q, any tips for buying a wash mitt ? My elderly Megs lambswool one has started to disintegrate. Tried a couple of microfibre ones but wasn't too impressed.

Should I just go for another lambswool one or can you get a decent microfibre equivelant ?

Haven't tried it yet Ally. As soon as the weather permits I'll give it a bash on the Mini and let you know how I get on.

I noticed that the pro valeters use it on detailingworld.co.uk

I polish my Elise using the Meguairs 3 stage pack
Stage 1 - Paint Cleaner,
Then stage 2 - Polish,
then stage 3 - Carnuba Wax.


Will it make a massive difference ?

yes claying your car really is a must when prepping your car for waxing. a clayed panel will feel like glass to the touch, and even untreated it will have water shedding properties. follow this up with a decent polish like auto glym super resin polish, which if applying by hand this is probably the best there is. finish off with a wax and your car will look better because their will be no contaminants to see and the wax will bond to the paint better thus lasting longer.

but clay is an abrasive so it should only be used twice a year.

You don't need to clay your car every time you want to wax it. As already said, a couple of times a year is sufficient for most but obviously depends how your car is used / stored etc. When you've used up your 3 stage Megs stuff there are better products to use for a similar price.

Bloody polishers.

Yep, I usually clay after the summer to get tar/bugs/etc off and then after the winter to get grime/salt off. Usually follow claying with polish / super resin polish (to fill swirls) / sealant / wax.

Can also highly recommend http://www.polishedbliss.co.uk for car cleaning products and clay/etc.
