Hi all,
I am wondering if a Hurricane Induction Kit is considered a performance upgrade, or simply an improved replacement air box for insurance purposes..?
Cheers,
Pete

I would declare it, its far to visible a mod not to. Not that I would advise not declaring anything but if you have a shunt and they don't want to pay you have offered them a way not to!

Thanks Richard,
I think your right, and I have sent them an email advising them that I do intend to make improvements to the car which may include after market parts which might be deemed as performance upgrades, but since this is a performance car straight from the manufacturer I would not expect to pay any extra...I'll see what they say. If they do, do you know of any other insurance companies that don't mind mods..?
What has really got my goat is that on my schedule it say, "You told us"...and it goes on about driving so many miles a year, and no performance upgrades have been fitted...etc...But when I filled out thier online form they never asked about any performance upgrades! I've asked them to remove this from my schedule...I even ran through thier online wizard again to check, and sure enough no question about modifications, so I don't know how they can just add this to the schedule.
I can see I and the insurance co. falling out over this, they denied this over the phone, saying that it must have been asked, and said that if there is any modification to the manufacturer spec that makes the car faster. they will not insure me at all!
They couldn't take the money fast enough when I signed up with them, & now they just want a get out clause, they just charged me an extra £20 for legal expenses cover too...I thought this was as standard.
AAaaarghhh, that's better, good rant
Cheers,
Pete

Legal expenses always costs about £15 - £20 extra.
Who are you with? Admiral considered my Hurricane an extra and charged me for it (about £60 IIRC), but Greenlight didn't hike the price for having it. High Street companies will always charge you extra for mods, but then not replace it in the event of an accident. The difference with companies like Greenlight, etc. is that they specialise in mods and so will actually replace like-for-like.

Chris Knott have got me a quote that is £250 cheaper than I am currently paying with A-Plan. This includes declaring the Induction kit and Larini back box. I'd maybe give them a buzz.
I ran a quote through Admiral online thing... with & without the same mods. Induction & exhaust made £50 extra which isn't too bad... plus they were only about £70-80 behind Chris Knott. Thing is, the admiral online thing seems to treat a back box as the same as a full system.... it doesn't break the exhaust thing down any further from what I could see. therefore, £50 could be pretty good if you had a sports cat plus manifolds as well.

Thanks Guys,
The insurance company I was with, M0re Th>n, would not insure me after declaring the Induction Kit & suspected sports exhaust at all. I had to cancel, and move to another insurance company. And despite this being due to no fault of my own, (thier online form does not ask if there are mods), they have not given a full refund, but a pro-rota refund, (ripped me off £100 for 4 weeks insurance, which they would not have honoured), and to add insult to injury they will not refund the extra legal cover I purchased or breakdown option!
I went with Tesco, simply because my day to day car is insured with them. They say that they have mirrored over my no claims bonus from the existing policy to this one, (2years), and if after the year there is no claim I will get the 3 years NCB on both cars

They were in my opinion quite pricey, £666 Full Comp, but accepted the modifications, and I think they included a breakdown recovery service as well.
After the year, (with hopefully no shunt), I may take the 3 year NCB, and try Greenlight & Chris Knott...I am scared to call them now as I supect they will be cheaper than I paid..? 0 NCB, Induction Kit & sports exhaust, no points on license in last 5 years or shunts in last 3 years..?
I would have liked some track insurance for next year
Cheers,
Pete

£666... is the price of the devil.
Seriously though, that ain't too bad for only 2yrs NCB. I think Chris Knott may have had their work cut-out to beat it. We are full NCB and best we managed so far was £435. Greenlight don't insure Elises anymore because Dezzy almost put them out of business (according to an email I rec'd from Greenlight)

Do Tesco still insist on a tracker though?
More Th>n sound as if they're at it, but that's insurance companies for you

Might be worth a phone call to the Ombudsman to get their take on it?
Elephant didn't bother to charge me extra for a Hurricane this year

Try Admiral/Bell. They gave me a good quote and I didn't have any no claims bonus. My car is not modded though so can't comment on how they deal with this, and I don't have a tracker, certainly worth a call next time.
If you genuinely have a case to claim back money you would need you should write a letter to them asking for someone to call/write to you within 7 working days to agree discussing paying what you ar owed. Send this recorded delivery so that it is a formalised letter. If you do not hear from them contact Citizens Advice and seek advice from them.
