How to insure my 20-year-old to drive the 111R

I'm planning a big road trip this summer ('Ring, Stelvio) and my son might come along.
He'll definitely be swayed if I can get him on the insurance. Plus I'd like him to get some experience of driving the Lotus when I'm with him.
Car currently insured with Admiral - renewal in a month or so. Any ideas who to go with?

Could you not add your son to the insurance for say a month during time that this would cover your road trip, dont know if this is possible but could save some money if quotes were too high for the year.

Insurance for under 21s is pretty much a no go unless you want to pay ridiculous amounts of money. I know Admiral dont touch under 21s on Lotii
(from experience)

Best of luck finding something reasonable, Insurance for younger drivers is massive ( an apprentice at work is paying £1500 a year for a sheddy only clio.
I feel partly to blame as I spent my early years bouncing off everything*
*although I never claimed, it was never worth it as I drove sheds (still do)

I too have to accept some responsibility - in my quest to find the limit I crossed it a few times

It's do-able ... But you won't like the cost...
Just checked my docs here's what I paid
Red Lotus S2 2002 - 18 years old - £4897
Blue Lotus S2 2002 - 19 years old - £4400
Silver Lotus S2 2003 - 20 years old - £3600
Black S2 Exige - 21 years old to date (I've just turned 22) - £1780
The Elise for some reason was a lot higher than the Exige - but I think this has something to do with the fact the Exige is classed as a coupe!
The first 2 policies were through Endsleigh then moved back to Bell.co.uk for the Exige. As Phil says - The Admiral Group won't touch you until 21

Ummmmmm.
Nope!!
Wow. I genuinely didn't realise that the premiums were so much at 18/19/20.
When I was 19 I had a Capri 2.0S and in its' time I suppose it was in the same ballpark as an elise but I don't remember the insurance being such a high %age of the value. Maybe I am just not remembering correctly but 4k for insurance is horrendous. Presumably if you have a prang then it must go even more ballistic.

I think in the light of age of driver and type of car to be insured its not outrageous....Its expensive because a younger driver is deemed to be inexperienced etc:?:
If it was cheaper

every Tom,Dick or Harry would be driving (crashing) Elises

I think a LOT of my mates looked at Loti thinking "I could finance that easy" but don't even think about insurance/maintanance etc. I think then by the time the insurance becomes affordable most people have other commitments and the chance passes them by. Im lucky enough to be able to afford it - it was the car that me and mrs had wanted for a couple of years - so why not.

Thanks all for your input so far. Particularly the premiums paid - knew it would be bad but not that bad.
So here is what I've found with a few minutes on the net.
Bell, self only driving, 4000 miles, car garaged, protected ncb, legal cover and personal injury (defaults) £291.85. Pretty damn good price I'd say.
Add my wife to the policy (though less than zero chance of her driving the car), no other changes, drops to £246.70
I've noticed recently that adding any 'mature' woman to car policies takes the cost down; my pal named his sister - so it is well worthwhile trying this to see what happens. I've tried quotes in my sons name, and adding his mum as a named driver has a great affect.
So, back to my boy. Added him to the policy aged 20 - guess what - no quote. Changed his age to a 21-year-old though and the quote was a very reasonable £811.60
I'll keep shopping........

Do you have to date him from birth??
Can't you do it from Conception??

So deal done. Gave up trying to get affordable insurance for a 20 year-old. Yes Endsleigh would do it but at huge cost.
Shopped around more than usual this year; called Richard Egger and CCI plus Bell, NU, DL etc etc. In the end stayed with Admiral - both cars including commuting and low excess of £250 for £615. Could have shaved off a few quid by swapping, but with bigger excesses. What swung it was my pal has just had a claim with Admiral and they handled it very promptly. Can add son aged 21 on for days at a time cost >£30 per week
One additional tip. Zero logic to this, but I've found Admiral and Bell charge you MORE if either car is garaged. Same cost to park on the street or in the drive. Nope, doesn't make sense. So price is the same if the car is garaged and not used for commuting versus parked on the street and used to go to and from work.
X7LDA - thanks for the wave tonight at the bottom of Liberton Brae.
