If we had a registration process for new members that had to include copying the squigly writing and inserting what number comes next, would it cut out what I presume the above is, automatic registration to multiple Forums?

We have the writing recognition already.
The next consideration is to manually approve accounts - being discussed now. Also some server level blanket bans we can make that will supposedly cut out 90% of this.

As I am normally on at 0600, quite happy to delete them until you get a permanent solution, as they are now taking over the whole of the "new posts" page.

Give it a few days - we're blanket banning IP ranges and implementing some pretty draconian rules. These should weed it out in the next week or so.

Well written article on this subject here

Why not simply put HRH Tutness in charge of new member admissions ? Whats the longest they would wait 24 hours and the mailer would let them know due to have volumes of spam we have introduced human interaction ?
Lots of mods here that will help with further methods of authentication.

The only trouble with letting tut administrate new members is that they need to have proven they have checked there oil in the last 47 seconds, or they dont get in

Methods already put in place today. We'll be tweaking and monitoring for the next week or two before making the call on manual activation.
Cheers folks - we know it's annoying, but we're sorting it.

Can I ask that nobody posts on spam posts?
If you want to report spam that's been missed or is particularly horrid, you can of course do so, but don't actually post on their threads (if you really want a thread, start a new one).
Thanks,
Robin
