Insurance and NCB query for those in the know...

OK, ive been running two policies for a number of years and built up maximum NCB on one and 6 years on the other.

However, having sold my elise and bought a classic defender on classic car insurance, the NCB doesnt get maintained (for some reason???)

Likewise, I have just got rid of my other car and now have a company car...

So...

Whats the deal with NCB's if I ever have to insure a car in the future - does my proof of no claims still stand in say 4 years time or would I need to start from scratch again?

R

NCB if not used only lasts two years.

Lasts 2 years as above. Confirmed with a few insurance companies earlier this year.

I believe some companies will count company car usage towards NCD otherwise you're back to zero after 2years

NCD only lasts 2 years if not being used so you then go back to scratch.

If you have been driving a company car, insurance companies will take that into consideration and offer a discount similar to your NCD experience but after the year you've been enjoying 9 yrs equivalent discount (when you start back on your own policy), you'll again only actually have 1 years NCD.

The same company may continue to offer you the discount but it won't be transferable (only the year you have acrued).

Classic policies tend not to build or use NCD as they are seen as being used sparingly. The upside is a lot of them match your initial NCD with a discount if you're running another main car.

In your situation i would look to get a classic quote, find the best, and then advise them you want a standard policy on the car using your NCD. It might turn out a few quid dearer than the classic policy but you will keep your NCD.

Alternatively you might find using the moneysupermarket sites and the likes, using your full NCD you will get some very cheap quotes anyway.

I'd only opt for a classic policy if you have 1 set of NCD you use on your everyday car.

If you are wanting to keep 9 yrs NCD though and you are going back to 1 car, you could always insure the lowest group scrap vehicle you can find that's on ebay, sell the bits, scrap the shell and keep the details. I couldn't condone such behaviour though

I just insured our fourth vehicle with no NCB ... didn't cost much more than having it ... I think once you're old enough it makes next to no difference whether you have NCB or not; put another way, we have 0 NCB and are paying 270 ... I doubt that if I went back to them now with 9 years NCB I would get 75% off that!

Cheers,
Robin

Agree with Robin, I believe NCB does not count for very much these days.

It's all a con. They aren't giving us a discount.

Equally how can some companies give "bonus NCD"? And if you have a crash and your NCD is "protected" then what value NCD?
