Contrary to the normal, we found a great deal for a new learner.
Callingwood insurance only insure learners, as they are considered a low risk while accompanied by a co-driver.
My young lad has a new scirocco and they insured him for 5k miles pa and no black box for just over £500 on his 17th birthday.

Unlike his sister, he passed his in less than two months, so the bargain didn’t last long, the policy ends when they pass. but the other good feature, they refund everyday not used. I’d highly recommend them.

Big money now however, I insure four cars for the same price as his one, we are all Aviva, he’s £1200 p.a. No black box,5k miles, they were the cheapest, even against the ones with the black box.

Wow - amazed at the “learner” price.

My eldest (wot is a bloke) went with Sheila’s wheels when he passed for £1200 pa too on his Swift. No black box or kerfew.

He was in his mates car recently as his mate ran a red light and risked 60 in a 30 as he was getting so close to his kerfew time: safety first eh?

I’m still going to con him into thinking there’s a device of some kind which mysteriously sends me a email, just to keep him in check. Like you, I wasn’t entirely convinced about the box, I hear they can be over sensitive even with very careful driving. Preventing speeding is obviously a good idea for youngsters, but penalising braking isn’t necessarily a good thing.

Went with Bell for my son at 17. £600 as a learner and policy rolled over when passed. 10 month duration but full 1 years NCB at renewal. He's still with them in year 3 and last renewal was £530 no mileage restriction.

Black box plugged in to cigarette lighter for 3 months and got £75 rebate as he scored good.

Almost 30 months in and coming iup to 3 years NCB and no issues. No mileage restrictions either. They've been brilliant for us.

I hadn’t heard of Bell, that’s looks like a good deal too, we’ll try them next time for comparison. The box for a short period seem much fairer than those with it permanently fitted.

Can you imagine if we had those boxes even for a day or two

I'd be screwed by a box. Think Bell is owned by Admiral iirc.

Bell was always cheapest when I was a new driver 20 years ago, good to hear they’re still good for young ‘uns.

My nephew has just bought himself a new-ish A3 and is paying £1000 as a learner- god knows what he’ll be paying once he passes 😲

I went to from peterhead to Aviemore at the weekend, back roads all the roads way and hardly another car to be seen. It was an epic drive, but if I’d had a black box, I’d have been locked up on arrival for braking and cornering alone!

As for speeding, when I asked what the consequences were, they said three instances of 15mph over receives a warning letter donit again and the policy is revoked. 30mph over was an instant cancellation of the policy.
