Ecclestone signals that 2009 could be last ever British Grand Prix

Is this the end for the British GP?Bernie Ecclestone has warned that there could be no British Grand Prix after 2009.

The Formula One supreme has told the Daily Telegraph that there are currently no plans for a 2010 British GP and has likened negotiations about a contract for the Silverstone race a ‘dead duck’.

The track’s existing deal is said to run out next year and it is rumoured that a deal that will cost Silverstone £11.2million has been put on the table.

The proposal has apparently been quieried with Ecclestone, thus leaving a stalemate that puts the future of the British GP in the balance.

Silverstone has however reportedly offered to make improvements to the circuit that have been demanded.

Ecclestone said he was not optimistic of a resolution: ‘I suppose they could come back to me. They could get the building done in six months. But I would not put any money on it.

‘The BRDC know the terms. If they meet them, then we are in business. But at the moment they can't and therefore there is no race in 2010.’

You would think that as a Brit Ecclestone would want to keep a British GP , instead he wants to hold a gun to their heads every year or so to flex his muscles.

Obviously (his) money is more important than his national pride.

Maybe time for another disgruntled F1 Team to set up a News Of The World exclusive (allegedly)

Annoyingly, sometimes I can see his point. Brit GP should be a cornerstone of the series, even if it's just because we're the home of the F1 industry (bear in mind, it wasn't always so...)

However, if you look at Silverstone in comparison to a lot of the GP facilities in the world, it looks like a quaint collection of chicken sheds. Granted, they've made leaps and bounds with the money they have, but they don't have enough.

The real problem is that the Govt are completely disinterested in motorsport as a way of promoting the country to the world, in stark contrast to the tiger economies that are ruling the roost with new GPs. The current model of running a GP is loss leading, even taking into account the greater influx of tourism and interest caused - it's a loss leading image-builder for nations now, not an event to make a profit on the gate.

How much of that is greed? Probably a good percentage - although you'd have to question Bernie as a businessman if he went for anything other than the highest bidder...

...surely nobody thinks F1 has been anything but a business since 1968? And who was responsible for this?

Unfortunately with all the new billion dollar tracks that have been recently built in the Middle and Far East, with more to come, the writing is on the wall for Silverstone. It will be ditched to make way for another oil funded newbie. Monaco will be next.

Tradition does not matter anymore, especially with the sawn off poison dwarf, who still has not got enough money despite a personal fortune of £3.5 billion, or enough trophies on his arm, despite an ex model wife with legs longer than his body, that could do us all a favour by giving him an on the job heart attack.

He gives Gargoyles a bad name.

Where's the national pride when you asking the world's F1 circus to a what is relatively speaking, a bit of a dump?

Not condoning Bernie or his actions

His support for the 'dump' ( and I don't disagree with you on that ) could be instrumental in turning its failing fortunes around and/or looking to a new facility in Britain (I know -will NEVER happen). But if F1 doesn't come to Britain the investment, sponsorship and interest in Motorsport in general in this country will suffer.
The dwarf, and as Shug said, the government, should recognise the benefit to the country of this major event instead of selling out the heritage to the highest bidder.

How long will it be until all the races are in the Middle and Far East and the European tracks are struggling to survive with local events and trackdays.

I think F1 is the pinnacle of motorsport technology . . . that's not the same as the pinnacle of motorsport . . . almost no overtaking apart from in the pits . . . is that a spectacle ? . . . I get my fill of F1 engine noise at my local hillclimb/sprint british championship round (there was a proper v10 f1 engined car at Fintray for example) . . . and there is just as much overtaking (feck all) . . . there are plenty more interesting racing series which offer much better motorSPORT than F1 and much more affordable prices and which are actually attainable to the regular guy on the street if he's talented . . .

F1 is a dead sport . . . it's just the money that keeps it going . . . not the sport . . . far too much dirty money involved in fact . . .

I'm looking forward to watching F1 next season when they go back to mechanical grip rather than all aero.

I agree but to see it live after next year looks like a passport will be needed.

If it works like we hope, although I read in Racecar Engineering that most think the FIA haven't gone far enough with the aero rules and a lot of downforce will be reclaimed - albeit not as efficiently as currently, so you may go back to different teams setting the car up differently and there being a more obvious gap between those running for straight line speed and those making it in the corners (elise styleee ;))
