Hillclimbing

Post by mac » Mon May 26, 2008 12:46 pm

I've noticed a section in the regs of the lothian car club saying that they will open a class for a make or marque of car if there's suffcient entries.

Would that be of interst to anyone? I'm sure we could arrange some form of lo-cost race type suits so all you would really need to spend money on would be a decent MSA approved crash helmet.

I'm guessing this might appeal more to the track whores in which case it's no real hardship investing in a good crash helmet (unless your own is up to the standard required) and it's probably only a matter of time before probax is required for trackdays anyway.

If there's sufficient numbers of folk looking for overalls I can even approach a manufacture for a bulk buy?

Next Doune event is on the 27/28th September as is the last round of the year. It's also the event where Lawrence arranged for a lot of us to have a run up the hill at lunch time.

I'd be very carefull about trying on the cheap race suit concept at Doune TBH . . . Lothian events have become a pain in the arse to enter specifically in the scrutineering area. I won't go into why this is online but I will say this is not the case with non Lothian events. I've entered about 25 events now all over Scotland and the other week at East Fortune I was given (along with almost the whole road car field) an MSA non compliance notification for my car, non safety related, and strangely my car (and everybody elses) has subsequently passed scrutineering 3 times since then with no changes - you work out where the problem is . . . so if there was any doubt whatsoever (and perhaps even if there wasn't any doubt) on safety kit, Lothian events are the ones where you will get gubbed. Great shame, but there you have it.

It's worth saying that the 25 quid you could spend on a proban welders boiler suit would probably be better spent as part of the 70 quid you need for a proban race suit . . . you then have no concerns on the day as to whether the suit will pass scruit . . .

As for helmets, there's no cheap way any more . . . and I believe that after 2009 the blue label BS bike helmets will no longer be legal either . . .

We just bought a lid for Nikki (who will be dual driving the Caterham on and off this year) and went for a snell sa2005 one over the red label BS one as I don't want to get 2 years down the line and find her little used lid is no longer usable.

Agree 100%

Fd generously loaned me his Proban boiler suit - or perhaps he just did it for the Guantanamo comedy colour  - at Lossie, a non-LCC event, last year. I felt at the time like I'd 'lucked-through' scrutineering... scrutineer never actually asked to inspect my suit. On closer inspection, I'm not convinced he would have passed it - not a full collar, etc.

The distraction of wondering if my suit would pass on the morning of my first ever speed event was something I could have done without.

Thanks for the input - I wasn't considering using the welders suit - more like speaking to Jays or AWS if we had enough numbers.

At Forrestburn last year I had all my kit checked (helmet needed a MSA sticker) but the scrutineer had a good going over my car and my overalls.

I've never been to an event where everything isn't checked . . . that's the rules . . . even if they know you and your car they still check, what I'm saying is that LCC events, specifically, may present a problem . . .

When Lawrence offered to do this last time (and priced it) the choices were a proban welders boiler suit (call it whatever you will) or changes to the boiler suit to make it much more legal which basically brought it up to not far short of the cost of an off the shelf suit . . . and you can get the off the shef suit with no organisation and no bulk buying requirement, today.

If you can talk down a manufacturer of proban race suits for a discount, more power to you . . .

Worth noting you dont need to spend a fortune to buy a race suit either - good luck though.
