To go hillclimbing/sprinting in a nominally std road car, what do I actualy NEED to do..?
And what class would I be entering?

This is what I can remember from previous... please correct me as required.

MSA membership (Non-Race National B)
MSA approved suit (not got one)
MSA approved helmet. (have a helmet but its bike spec)

Sticky out black thing on the front for the timing beams.

What else.?

The car has normal road seat belts for now.

Filling out the application form for the licence now.

Ive had a look through the notes and I think I need a Non-Race National B

Not clear if I need a medical with it or not. It says

"-over 18, applying for a race, truck or kart race licence (see note 24-28) and have never provided a medical report before?"

If I answer yes to the above I need to go to the doc for a report.. but it is a Non-Race National B so I think the answer should be no. The notes are not that clear on this.

I fully expect the radiator issue to be fixed in the near future... and hopefully the budget is there for the safety gear as well. All the other go faster bits can wait.

Wise words. Lawrence would probably say "To go faster, first you have to go fast!"

:-)

Good luck with the prep.

Need :-

Non Race National B Licence
MSA suit (can be a proban suit - about 70 quids ish - racing requires nomex - not required for HC/Sprint)
MSA helmet (probaly the single expensive item - Snell SA2005 is the common spec)
Beam Breaker - can be easily made from some sheet ali . . .
OFF sticker for the ignition switch (just so people know which way to turn the ignition to switch it off)
This year list 1a or 1b tyres - which is anything you can fit to an elise

That is all that is required.

For a road legal car - MOT, Insurance and Road Tax must be present and brought to the event. Standard belts are ok.

People turn up to events like this in completely stock road cars . . . and enter road car classes . . .

You'd probably want to enter A8, presuming your car has the original fit engine (ie. isn't a honda S1/S2) . . .

No medical required. It's a Non Race National B which does not require a medical, even if you upgrade like I have to a Speed Nat A no medical is required . . .

You also need to be a member of an MSA registered club, if you did Kames you should have a EACC membership which will cover you. When choosing a helmet worth bearing in mind that there is talk of the MSA dropping the BS 6658 type A spec from the approved list in the not to distant future. This is to supposedly take out of circulation 10 year old helmets!!. What it means is any older 2yr+ bike helmets that carry this approval will not be eligible for competitions. In a nut shell if you are buying a new helmet, like FD says make sure its Snell SA2005 approved and you won't have to change it. Once you get your license you will get a copy of the "blue book" which has all the rules and regs in it. And if you think it's all very confusing now, wait till you've had a read of it
As FD said Class A8 is what you will be entering with a road going Elise, as long as it's got it's original block, pretty much everything, tuning and suspension wise, is free.
Look forward to seeing you in the future.

Which events are you planning on doing BTW?

Wise words indeed..... :!:
In fairness, the fella probably said those words to me or in my company at some point in the past! They rank up there alongside "to use less fuel, you need to use the brakes less"...took me a while to work that one out but michty-me did it stick!!

Hey John

Reading your post and thought it may be better to get an idea of the class or amount of comp you intend to do, and then start getting th gear best suited to that?

Was planning to get the base level FIA approved suit (£220) and a decent helmet (£300)... as you never know what may happen down the line.... I have the boots/gloves/underwear  8856-2000 spec already.
