landrovers

Post by thinfourth » Sun Apr 18, 2010 10:33 am

Okay started as a PM from someone but thought i would put it in the open incase someone else is wanting to know
Agent X wrote:Hello,

We are in the market for a Landy. Purely to have as a play thing. Our budget is approx £1K - £3K-ish. It will be for doing some off road events. I'm thinking SWB, with a V8. Can you recomend any clubs / forums / places to look for ones for sale, or even know of any for sale?

What spec would you suggest looking for? I have seen a few on line that have 2" suspension lift, and winches, and fat knobbly tyres. Are they worthy mods? Is a roll cage essential / recomended?

Cheers

Agent X

Okay if it is for trials i would recommend a susuki to be honest as they are light small and bouncy

A landrover is a bit of a big bruiser for competition unless you are going for challenge type events where you end up with 2 ton plus monsters who can go anywhere.

A cheapy disco is fine but unless you have another big 4x4 to tow the bugger around on a trailer then you have to keep it road legal which can be an arse with a cheap disco that is used offroad. It is easier with a pricer defender as they are less prone to damage offroad.

A little susuki are light and could be towed on a trailer by the golf.

If you are going for a landy then buy on condition look at the web and learn where they rust as discos are terrible for rust, defenders less so.

As to mods i would say leave it damn near standard apart from tyres and learn from there as raising the suspension can make it a bit more tippy and less stable so while it will stop you dragging the chassis the axles are still down there getting caught. Also on wheels don't go too big as that puts extra stress on the driveline and more likely to go pop and if you don't have a trailer its a bugger to get home. If i get a breakage on shrek it gets dragged on the trailer and taken home to get a driveshaft replaced.

I shall try and get a trial up here and you can come along for a go in shrek

A good forum to learn from is the difflock one as it covers a wide range of vehicles
Landrover 90 = Muddy shed spec
Fiat panda = Couldn't care less spec
Landrover ?? = Muddy shrek spec
Unimog 404S = Very slow silly offroader spec
Kubota F1900 = Snowplough spec

Unfortunatly Thinny's advice arrived after we had made our purchase.

Suzuki was suggested by me, but had too small engine for the Mrs  .
Defender was first choice, but were few and far between, and fairly pricey. You get a lot more disco for your money. That's why we went and had a look at a 3.9 V8, with quite a few mods. Unfortunatley the in-bred selling it neglected to turn up, despite making the arrangment the night before, and us travelling about 300 miles to see it!
On refelction, I think we ended up with a better choice. The V8 was thirsty beyond belief (sub 10 mpg), and was pretty tierd all round. We would have been paying a premium for the mods, most of which would need replacing. So, we ended up with a standard 300TDi Disco, with plenty left in the budget to sort a few repairs, and do as much or as little modding as we feel like.

A disco is a fine machine offroad if you aren't too worried about the dangly bits and the squishy bits

Stick a decent set of sensible sized wheels on it and you should be laughing

Don't forget to get a beefy Steering Guard...to protect the front of the car when driving over small plastic cars. :thumbsup
