Time Attack-Brands-Pics for the boys added

Post by gambler » Mon Jul 05, 2010 5:55 pm

After the long drive down. We stopped for a ''couple'' of beers with Walshy.I dont think that man really understands the concept of a couple. By early afternoon I was sober enough to drive to the circuit.

We arrived at the circuit about 3 on Saturday afternoon only to find out that we were not allowed into the circuit until 7pm. Luckily, we managed to talk the surprisingly attractive marshal to let us into the circuit to watch some of the Aston Martin owners club race meeting. A bunch of rich people going not very fast in some lovely cars. F355 Challenge cars and some N24’s on road tyres only doing 54.5 sec laps in qualifying. Eventually we got into the circuit so we could dump off the gear not bother washing the car and bugger off for another crap nights sleep in the hotel. Too excited to sleep… that sounds wrong… looking forward to racing the next day so much that I did not get a nights decent sleep.

The day of the race arrived and it was boiling. Being from Scotland im not too good with the heat and did not even realise that there was a 2nd digit in the temperature guage and don’t think I have ever seen it with a 3 as the 1st digit.

Warm up – Just went out to re-familiarise myself with the circuit as I have not driven it since last year. Gently brought up the pace to a 54.971 lap which was quickest in 4wd F/I club and brought the car back in. Pissing oil and water. Bad memories of last year when I destroyed my engine. Luckily it had just breathed a bit of oil that had leaked and a bolt in the cooling system had come loose.

Practice – Went out nice and early and was sitting in the pit lane quietly boiling away when some steam started pissing out of the bonnet. The lateral performance boys were right on the case and came sprinting their garage and had a look underneath the bonnet. It was just some spilt coolant. Off I merrily went and pushed a bit harder. The track temperature had obviously gone up a fair bit as the tyres were going off mega quick. I came back into the pits, sweating like a fat kid in a cake shop. When I checked the time sheets I was quickest again in club 4wd with a 54.372

Qualifying – Again I went out nice and early and was 2nd in line at the pit exit behind Fee. On the warm up lap Walter Morris who I have been quicker than in all the previous events was wanting passed. I decided to let him pass as I knew that his skyline had a lot more power than I had and would be a major help on the long start finish straight and thought he might know the circuit well. I prefer having some space anyway. On my 1st lap I posted a 53.912. The second lap there was not as much grip as the tyres were going off. The circuit was less grippy and you ended up bouncing all the way round surtrees. I did a few cool down laps another medium paced lap as I had not been happy with my entrance to graham hill bend on the flying lap, and then headed back into the pits. This time sweating like a pedophile in a packamack at a school disco. Not that I know any of those. Im just guessing. Seriously, it was biblically hot in the car with all the gear on and the heater turned on to soak some heat from the engine.

Before the final I knew that Warren Kelly would be fast as he was very quick last year and Fee had been just behind me all day. After being quickest in all the other sessions I knew It was far from in the bag.

Final – I got myself out nice and early again. On the warm up lap Morris danced past me again. The circuit felt even hotter now and there was less grip about. The quickest way out of the corners seemed to be just to 4 wheel drift trying to keep it as tidy as possible. Surtrees was even more bouncy than before. Needing plenty of power on to keep the car heading in the right direction. On the second flying lap I posted a 53.684. After some cool down laps I pushed a few more times, experimenting with different lines etc to try and better the lap time.I was not confident that that lap time would be quick enough. I just could not get the grip in the tyres as I had about 5 more quick laps about half a second. The grip was just not there though.

I returned to the pits to find out I was 3rd 0.03 behind Fee and 0.25 behind Warren who won club 4wd. The 0.03 of a second behind Fee was quite hard to swallow. Then again, If I had swallowed a few less cakes then I might have been 3 1/00s quicker!!!!

Then it was for the podium. ‘’ and 3rd place in 4wd club is……Gary Sear????? He was not even there?? I was a bit disappointed at missing a proper podium. Turns out they had marked up the sheet wrong. I eventually got to the podium with Warren and Fee and then got a picture taken with the lovely modified live and time attack girls, it was not all that bad then!

Afterwards I had a good look at the splits etc. On the 1st sector I was .16 quicker than Warren and 0.293 quicker than Fee. I just lost the time on the straight compared to Fee, if you can call it a straight. On the start finish line I was the same speed as Warren but nearly 10mph slower than Fee.

Nice write up Scott. Congrats on 3rd shame it wasn't 1st but well done none the less. :thumbsup

The problem I had on the bigger circuits and in fact any with decent staright including Knockhill was that no matter how quick I was on the bends the more powerfull cars made it all up by powering down the straights. Very frustrating catching them under brakes and round the corners to watch them disappear down the straight. :?

Good effort - maybe you have to get tactical and time your runs such that you'll be able to slip stream a muscle car up the straight - then you get the same speed he does over the start/finish line :-)

Cheers,
Robin

Thanks guys. Nice to see that someone enjoys my illiterate ramblings.

Dom and Robin - I have just been reading a thread on the time attack forum. It shows just how far down on power i am. This was written by Adam from Trackscotalnd. Fee's skyline is 611bhp

I know that Eric Homes is running more power than Fee.... (same mapper LOL )
I think Lisa Diamond is too, in vids it pulls away on the straights...
Walter Morris - def got more grunt if it's at all like the spec Marcus had it at last year :O RAPIIIIIDO!
Gary Searl - Saw build info a couple of years back when it was first built (2008 TA i think) and it was something like 750bhp.
Scott Robson - Dont think he's ever had it dyno'd but he thinks in the region of 500.
Nick Chatburn - bit sceptical on this (and he knows it LOL ) but 550 or so at the engine.... very good driver/car if he's getting those times with that power in a full weight GTR. Must be 200kg or so heavier than our 32

With Fee at Knockhill i was neck and neck with her at the second split(railway stright) on best times and then lost .7s between there and the start finish line. And i felt like i was doing the hairpin pretty well.

I actually have tried to be tactical and catch one of the big power cars just in time for the straight. Its never worked out right though as they usually end up knackering up the corners just before or after. With there being such a small window of grip with the R888s I usually just try and keep some space for myself.

J2LOT - I have just emailed the organisers to get some quality pervy pics of myself and the lovely Time Attack ladies. Will post ASAP :thumbsup

Nice write up Scott, pretty impressive results tbh, this is your first podium?

I am wanting to do TA or a similar series in a few years time, hopefully the field wont be too far advanced by then!

3rd podium from the 3 events this year Phil :D I now have a full set of tropys 1st, 2nd and 3rd. Need some more of those 1st one though. They are much nicer.

There are other classes in TA 4WD F/I is the biggest power class. Now the 850hp supras have been moved up a class RWD F/I. Being a tuner series though it is always possible to buy lap times. There is also a couple of N/A classes. Under 3l and over 3l and a FWD F/I. The winning times have only got slightly quicker each year as the quickest people usually end up getting moved up into Club Pro.

I need to read your write ups a bit closer in the future
I would be looking at the club challenge 4WD F/I using an early evo as I know them well, this is all prospective though. I'll probably hassle you with questions nearer the time

Everyone is soooo damn secrative LOL and without being on track in the right senario its near on impossible to get an idea of who has the most power (and least weight i pressume) down the straights. Lisa Diamond was obvious.... Fee caught her on the corner before the start/finsh at Oulton then fell back down the straight and she was flat out (all on vid).

Were you not around the same trap speeds as Fee ay round 1 and 2? I was pretty shocked at the traps speeds she set at brands!

Fee and i were on almost identical traps at round 1. At knockhill her start finish line trap was a fair bit quicker. About 7-8mph i think. Trap 1 in the braking zone was pretty similar though.

Everyone is mega secretive about power etc. I think at track days everyone adds a bit on for pub figures. Time Attack people seem to take a bit off to make them look like a better driver. I think i might get mine on a dyno at some point. Just out of curiousity. Its going to be 500 or maybe a touch more with the MD321T+ turbo on a 2.0. I know Kev Horsely is only making just over 550 on a 2.35 with a billet gt30though and he is on 100% E85. Im just on a 20% mix

Oulton Speed Traps (final)

Sector 1 (braking for Island hairpin possibly)

Scott - 116.9mph
Fee - 116.7mph

Sector 2 (POWER out of knickerbrook and up hill)

Scott - 105.0mph
Fee - 104.5mph

Sector 3 (POWER over start/finish)

Scott - 115.5mph
Fee - 112.0mph

KH Speed Traps (final)

Sector 2 (braking for hairpin)

Fee - 122.2mph (2nd highest overall)
Scott - 116.1mph

Sector 1 (power out of hairpin and up the hill to line - so POWER for sure)

Fee - 111.1mph (4t highest overall)
Scott - 106.9mph

Brands Speed Traps (final)

Sector 1 (Entry into Surtees.... braking maybe)

Fee - 100.5mph
Scott - 97.5mph

Sector 2 (POWER out clearways and up hill to start/finish)

Fee - 137.8mph
Scott - 129.3mph

Fee did have more power for Brands (compared to first 2 rounds) but not as much as the difference Brands speed trap would suggest! (only an exhaust change).... I think she is perhaps getting more used to the car and getting power on earlier and earlier now.
