Bike Enduro Hare and Hounds Event

Thought I'd post this in here although it's not so much motorsport for me as I'm not competitive in the slightest and in the bottom class too.

The first round of the SACU Adult Hare and Hounds was cancelled in December due to the poor weather so the new first round was Sunday at Tain, about 60 miles north of Inverness.

I've never been to Tain and had heard good and bad things about the track there. Meant to be an excellent track but unfortunately someone died in an accident there last year. He was pretty handy too. :(

Anyway they have built an enduro loop for the H&H. H&H is basically a 5 to 10 mile off road course made up of sandy sections, obstacles, bogs, mud, woods etc etc, and the idea is to do as many laps as you can in 3 hours. Simples!

So anyway I set off about 5am to get there and get ready for the 11am start. Weather on the way up was attrocious and I nearly died in a flooded section of motorway which I hit at about 70mph, (didn't see it at all), and couldn't see a thing for about 3 or 4 secs whilst in the flood. It was a bit like a log flume. Made it through though so carried on North.

Got there signed on and changed and ready for start. First part was a section of the mx track which I wasn't looking forward to with big table top jumps and very deep sand. after that it was a mixture of wooden log obstacle sections, a ramp with a 5 foot drop off and some very very boggie sections. In total about a 7 mile loop.

It was a great work out and about half way in I was really enjoying it and getting much more confident and quicker. Unlike car trackdays where I am usually quite quick from the off I am really slow on my first lap at these events. Surprisingly my favourite section was the mx track, I started to really get the hang of riding through the deep sand which is all about momentum and keeping the speed up. The jumps were great fun even though I wasn't going that high or far. Watching some of the experts taking these was really impressive. I just had to make sure I didn't fall or break down in the landing areas.

The bogs were actually not too bad either, whereas last year I would have been stuck in lots of them, I am much better now and can carry my speed over them. If you go too slow the tyres get caked in mud and you have no grip so you need to carry enough speed to clear the mud from the tyres. Usually what I do is try and take a different route to others which can involve me going through fresh heavily reeded areas which is fine except you can't see any hidden rocks or ditches. I hit one reed at a fair speed, 3rd gear, on Sunday and there must have been a rock behind it as I hit it and shot into the air quite a bit. Ok when you know it's coming but not so when you're not.

Normally I have to stop after about an hour and have a rest/get fuel but I didn't stop at all on Sunday except when I stalled or to think about an obstacle and see how it should be done or to help someone else get their bike out.

This was probably partly becase there weren't any steep hills which are my nemesis.

Anyway great day, I am in agony today so must have been a good work out. My arms are particulary sore and I think this is because my gloves got wet in the first puddle and stayed that way throughout so my grip was not as good as it should have been, hands sliding off the handlebar grips so had to grip tighter.

I also don't like steep hills as once rolled a quad down one, got good as to the top and then it started to bog down...stalled it started rolling back and decided in my wisdom that i would be better to turn it level to the hill as by this point it was gaining speed.......must of rolled about 10 times chancing me pretty much falling on my feet all the way down :damnfunny

I just wish I had done it sooner in life and I would be better at it.

Yeh quads are bloomin dangerous. And heavy if they land on you.

Not so bad when that happens on a bike as you can usually get turned and just go back down and try again.

Haven't got a clue, I can't even remember how many laps I did. The results usually take a couple of days to come out. I'll be near the bottom of the bottom class though.

My goal when I started this time last year was just to last the 3 hours and actually finish. Getting better though. 8)

Results are out now. I managed 5 laps although it felt like more. I came in 5th in the class which sounds good until I mention that there were only 7 in the class. There's usually many more. So I was 3rd last. :damnfunny

To give you an idea of how rubbish I am, the experts were doing 17 laps and even in my class the top finishers managed 13. :damnfunny Nevermind, when I started last year I couldn't even do 1 lap.

Video from the day where I make an appearance at 3:59, going well then get stuck, and at 6:16 going over the logs. :thumbsup

Not a bad result! Look at the positives; last year 1 lap, this year 5. That's five times better - next year you'll be on course for 25 laps....

Total respect for giving it a go; way more than I would have managed

Good effort :thumbsup

I dabbled in some of that stuff years ago and to manage 5 laps in that would have had me really chuffed :D

I used to have to lie in a darkened room for two days after a session on the bike.............

Well done.

Never thought of it like that.

Why what is it that puts you off?

Yeh it fairly takes it out of you. My tendons/ligaments in my forearms seem to always swell up after these events are are really sore for about a week or so afterwards. Last time it was my right arm, this time it is my left arm.

Well Round 2 was on Sunday, description of course:

The course consists of the Melville Motocross track plus an additional 10 minutes in the forest extending the course to 8 miles which will take the top riders about twelve minutes to complete. There are all the enduro classes plus a two hour motocross class that does not go into the woods and does not count towards the Championship.

The course is designed for the enjoyment of all competitors regardless of their experience.

When I looked at that 8 miles in 12 minustes it made me think that the top riders were averaging about 40mph. That is unbelievable considering the course.

Here's a link to the video of this round. Don't see me on this one unfotunately although I do remember seeing him on the course. 8) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q6-VgXCDaqc

Anyway I got off to a great start, probably too good, and was brought back to earth quickly when I stalled on the first hill. Realised I needed to settle into a pace and plug away, then got stuck at a very deep ditch were loads of bikes were stuck.

Last year at this event was my first ever off road event and I barely managed a lap and was knackered. So it was good to see if I had improved. I must have been a good bit quicker than ususal as I had a couple of offs which really hurt, whereas normally it's not too bad. In the wooded section (most of the course) the trees were very tight to get through and a simple mistake or drifting off the line would have you tree hugging. Nice bruise on my hand to prove it.

Anyway I lost count of my laps again (which is unbelieveable considering I do so few  ) and after 2 and a half hours I came in for fuel. Didn't really need to but my grips were covered in mud and my gloves were soaked so I was struggling to hold on at times. I thought I had done 5 laps and so decided after a quick rest, fuelling up, cleaning the bars and puting on my spare gloves I'd go out and do one more lap and finish at that.

Came back round with a few minutes to spare so must have done a decent 20 min lap, experts were doing 12 min laps.

Results out today and I came 25th out of 39 in Sportsman class. I had completed 5 laps. Top 5 sportsman did 11 laps and top expert did 14 laps.

I suppose the good thing is that my pain is now from impacts and not from just muscle fatigue/lack of fitness, so getting much better.
