My claim that VAG had 11 million 1.6 TDI engines available, on the other hand, was completely serious ;-)

I think some of those are 2.0 litres too.

Very good units regardless. What a fuss.

Mexican stand off - I can't see the rest of the F1 circus watching Red Bull walk.
What hasn't been referenced in all the latest discussions is the Ilmor engine Red Bull were looking at/ developing alongside Renaults development - might that still be an option?

Here's a thought - if the other engine suppliers are not willing to supply RB with their engines (or latest engine) due to the "fear" that RB will be too qucik due to their aero / chassis technological advantages, why do RB not do a deal to share some of that "know how" in return for the better engine supply. Would not work with MB as they seem pretty well sorted just now, but could potentially bring Ferrari into play with MB, and bring RB in on the act. Three way battle at the top? - bring it on! Appreciate my suggestion of technical expertise exchange would never happen,...

It would be a real shame for all the guys at the factory it Mateschitz walked away, but I can't help feel it might be better for F1 in general. Sure, there's no end of egomaniacs in F1, but he's come across as a petulant child - because his team are all of a sudden not winning. Let's not forget, it'd be likely someone would come in and buy them (maybe that's Renault's ultimate play in this) as the weight the teams existing credits under the shady Concorde agreement would be worth millions in any case.

How about taking the legendary budget and do what Ferrari do - there was a project underway with Ilmor - whilst it's not a quick fix, it would mean they are not beholden to the issues of their engine manufacturer - it's clear that they spend enough already to be able to afford an engine programme. (as I see Keith has already posted)
