Would a Honda Elise need a roll cage for SLS?

Post by Andy G » Thu Jul 28, 2016 9:54 pm

Hi guys

Trying to get a late entry for SLS this weekend and having looked through the regulations it seems to me to suggest that an Elise with a Honda engine would actually need a roll cage to be able to compete?

You could just use the 211, and be done with it :-)

Found that out myself Andy when I looked into it a couple of years ago. There was something else as well but can not remember what.

Makes no sense at all when there are now 350-420hp Exiges and Evoras, the whole scenario is supposed to be based around hp/weight ratio, but they always seem to manage to complicate it. Maybe Renny could tell me why a Honda engine needs a roll cage and a Toyota does not.

Standard in motorsport rules since Noah was a lad that to count as a production car, something needs to at least have the engine block it left the factory with. The minute you open that up, you could stick a bloody F1 engine in it and claim entry to a production class. There has to be a line drawn. So, change engine, it becomes a "prototype".

As mentioned above its because of the Honda engine it classes the car in sports libra class which means u would need a cage etc. But remember you would also need a dyno power to weight check as well. I Will be there this weekend in the Impreza in class A

The rules are the same for everyone it wouldn't be too bad for a Honda engined elise/exige in the Scottish sprints you would only be in with radical''s etc lol. SLS is not as bad for modified cars as it's power to weight that is the real factor for ur class so the trick is getting the car in a class right at the top end of the power bracket even if that means adding weight to do so

Just out of interest, what's the cost on the day to spectate and what time is the start?

Randomly up visiting family this weekend and didnt realise this was on, I might take the wee man along to have a look.

Not sure on cost thinks it's around £12 for an adult but there is a lot on this weekend as well as SlS there is a round of the British Sprint Championship and a round of the MG Trophy championship so worth a visit. SLS warm up session normally starts around 9ish

As others have said, the change of block moves the car to Libre, which means a cage, harness and FHR. The 2-11 is fine as Specialist Production, so only helmet, fireproof suit and gloves.
Should be a busy weekend. If anyone else is up, pop by the Scrutineering Bay and say Hi.

Group B yesterday.

1) FionaK 55.7
2) AndyG 57.1
3) DaveL 58.3
4) AdamK1.07

I think that when Andy is weighed and RR he could well be in Class C, but in fact he would have ended up 4th there as the first three did 56"s. I thought Dave would have been ahead of him as he has a better P/W ratio and more experience in the car.

Ps:- Final practice this morning and Dave obviously quicker on his usual clockwise direction, 55.4 against Andy's 57.2.
