I’m going racing!!

Hi all!

If you don’t know me already, I’m Jen, and Iv been on SE for about 10 years now. I used to live up in Aberdeen but after a divorce and a few years living in the Middle East I am now back in Scotland and based in the central belt.

Last summer I decided to get into circuit racing and have been an extremely busy girl over the last eight months or so. If you follow me on social media you’ll see all my posts but if not, here’s a brief summary of my goals and what Iv been up to:

• In June/July I was encouraged by a friend to do some circuit racing after I mentioned I’d love to give it a go and do some instructing on my time off from my day job, so I set to work. I got a personal trainer to get fitter and stronger for racing. He used to race in Formula Renault (among other things) so has been through all the racing driver fitness training himself before stopping racing altogether and trained to become a personal trainer. I then went to Turner Autosport in Strathaven to look at getting kitted out. They sell everything on Demon Tweeks plus P1 and a few other manufacturers, and I wanted to get properly fitted for everything so I went to them.

• In August I got my ARDS National B race licence assessment booked for October and passed with flying colours. I aced the theory paper and in the driving assessment, the Instructor (Graham at Knockhill) called me a dark horse! 😂 He was genuinely surprised at my driving. I think the gazillion pax laps over the years at trackdays helped that, so thanks guys! 😂🙌🏼 I got excellent marks on that bit which I was really pleased about, especially considering I’d only done one trackday previously.

• During this time I also joined Susie Wolff’s Dare to be Different (aimed at helping women in motorsport). I entered a competition through Dare to be Different to win a day’s driver training with CAT Driver Training, and I was picked as the winner! So I had my training in January down at Millbrook Proving Ground. Colin, the chief instructor there, is so experienced and amazing at what he does. I learnt so much about car control and my own capabilities. From that day we formed a partnership, and CAT Driver Training is now one of my Official Supporters. A video of my day is on my YouTube channel (see below for link).

• I then did lots of research on which car to race. I want to get into instructing so I need signatures on my race licence to upgrade to an instructors licence and doing SMRC events was the most logical choice. I narrowed it down to 3 different championships: Legends, C1’s or Fiesta ST’s. At first, the Fiestas were the most expensive, then the Legends then the C1’s, but then the Fiesta ST team owner got back in touch saying he was putting together a class for the fiestas that would make everything more affordable and he could match the C1 quote. I don’t know about anyone else, but I’d rather race a Fiesta ST that a C1 in a sprint race, so that was it, decision made!

Since then there have been a few things mentioned to be in the pipeline for me through Dare to be Different. One at Silverstone in the run up to the British GP and also a possibility of shadowing one of their ambassadors at a race weekend. I am also hoping to have a few things through Knockhill confirmed soon and a few newspapers (National And Local) have also covered my journey. Iv also had the potential opportunity to enter as a guest in the Lotus Cup if funds allow, but that’s maybe for next year! 😂 I am hiring a car from PCR Motorsport and been helping prep it for racing too which has been a lot of fun.

I want to be a role model for both women and men getting into motorsport at a later age with no real racing/motorsport background, and show the processes and how to do it. Raising awareness is my aim.

With all that in mind, I am now looking for sponsorship for my race season. I have decided to do it on a race by race basis. I can afford to do three race meets on my own. But with the help of companies putting in half a meet while I fund the other half, I can do the whole season. This would entail:
- a sum of money to contribute to one race weekend (details on request but it is considerably below £1000)
- In return I would promote the company in social media outlets (Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, website) in the lead up to the race and post race. If there are any newspaper articles written around the time I will also ensure advertising there.
- I will also decorate the car with the company’s livery for that weekend so testing, qualifying session and races also advertise the company.
- Free tickets to the event
- Photo opportunities with the car throughout the weekend.
- My race car will also be sitting out in the paddock at Knockhill between races advertising companies or I may even be able to get it to a location for any event the company may have on and want to show the car off.
- Any money given can be included in allowable expenses, and if need be I can provide an invoice for the tax man.

If anyone reading this would be interested (or knows anyone that might be interested) in sponsoring me, please drop me a PM.

Please, please please follow me on social media if you are on it. Or subscribe to my blog on my website for all my updates.

The more followers I have, the better the chance of sponsors willing to take a chance on me. I’ve worked really hard so far, and will strive to continue this driving force.

My first race weekend is this weekend at Knockhill, so will post a link to a race report once it’s over. Any questions in the meantime, just get in touch. 😊
