I think this will be the last year in F1 for Haas, they have been going backwards especially last year and the only thing stopping them being bottom of the pile is the williams is even sh*t than the Haas. Expect that to change in 2021.

The reason Mercedes did so well in this engine era is that they tipped a lot of money (I want to say beeellions, but not sure it's quite that much ;-)) during the last season before the hybrid engines came in. Probably by some mix of solid engineering and luck they hit upon the right arrangement of turbo/generator/motor that would turn out to be the optimum. They did this in the off season, before there were engine development tokens, etc.

Renault came with a broken engine - remember red bull's first season on the new hybrid engines? It was woeful.

Ferrari came with a gutless engine.

They have spent since then catching up and for a while Ferrari were there (by cheating, obviously).

It's ironic that Honda has developed their engine entirely within the hybrid era and has done the most to catch up to Mercedes, despite being entirely shackled by the development tokens and limited engine numbers per season. The new engine rules in '22 (is it?) will jumble it all up, but you have to imagine that somewhere in a factory Mercedes have already spent another €beelion on an engine that will at least be competent/reliable. Whether or not it is the winner, who knows.

Honda have thrown in the towel. It's only a matter of time before Renault do the same (Renault/Nissan needs F1 like a hole in the head).

I think F1 engines are now largely irrelevant - they are no longer exciting like the V10's, etc. - and in the real world, hybrid is old hat - so we're in the unusual position of F1 treading somewhere that we know for sure the car manufacturers won't be going (turbo/motor/generator MGU-H stuff is never coming to road cars). I am a fan of the current F1 engine in so far as it is a technical marvel, but it's a solution to the wrong problem, it turns out. I question how much longer F1 can run with any ICE in the car - unless they can get the cars to run on Hydrogen or something similarly inoffensive. Of course the F1 circus is an environmental catastrophe, so it's not the emissions from the F1 cars that matter, it's whether the investment in the sport is driving investment in cleaner tech for road cars. If it's not, then the manufacturers will slowly drift away from the sport now that their target markets are all having ICE vilified or outright banned. That might then open the door for shed-engineering teams once more - make your own V12 running on whatever fuel you like - but I doubt the big money will follow the sport at that point.

Re: drivers, Merc won't switch Bottas/Russell whilst under contract - Bottas brings in enough points to make sure that they win the championship - whether he comes second or third in the drivers' championship is of little concern to Mercedes. Now if Perez can be relied upon to put the second RBR in fourth place or higher most races (I don't see why that shouldn't be the case) then there will be more pressure on Bottas - but until then, he's reliable enough.

The Perez situation will be interesting to watch. It will be a solid indicator of how good or indeed bad the RB really is as it will be the first time an experienced driver has been along side Max. Still think the whole package is set up round Max's driving style which probably won't suit Perez initially and we will see if he is allowed to make changes to alter the handling balance to suit his driving style.

I predict Checo will make his tyres last 50% longer than Maxy Jazz’s

Exactly Campbell. Perez is one of those divers that seems to cope with the car however it's set up. I expect he will keep Max honest at the very least.
