Which Satnav?

Post by graeme » Tue Jul 31, 2007 1:53 pm

Sorry all... yet another "Which satnav should I get?" thread.

Off to Fwance in August (not with FF6) and I admit that the 99p paper map-book just ain't going to be enough...

I'm interested in Elise-related problems such as wind-noise and direct sunlight. Where do you put a satnav so you can hear it and see it?

Obviously I want to spend as little as possible, so the Tom Tom One or similar will probably do, unless anyone can tell me what it won't do and why I should spend a bit more.

One feature I do want is a campsite location overlay, as I don't really know where we're headed yet, so if anyone knows of a database of campsites for France, that would be cool.

Any advice on this REALLY appreciated, as I know nothing about these things...

Cheers,
Graeme

Great bit of kit. Can see and hear it fine placed in lower right hand corner of windscreen.

Don't know which model no. it is off the top of my head.

I recently bought a Tomtom One Europe for use on a trip to the GP at the Nuerburgring - Highly recommended !

I bought the XL ( wider screen ) model, not for screen width but because it had the speed trap sites built-in. On the standard Tomtom One this database has to be purchased extra.

See http://www.compare-satnav-deals.co.uk/ for prices.

I've been thinking about going for one of the head-unit ones from Alpine or something. I hate the idea of sticking something to my windscreen or dash, and want a neat in-dash solution.

Anyone got any experience of them?

The blaupunkt satnav that comes in top end VX's and Europas is meant to be nasty nasty nasty, can't comment on the Alpine though.

For what it's worth i've got TomTom on my windows mobile and it's a great piece of kit. But my ex had TomTom one and that was also good.
Focus ST estate, i3s and more pushbikes than strictly necessary.

....did i ever tell you about the Evora and VX220 i used to own?

I use the entry level Navman F20... no complaints with it. Was going to buy the Tom Tom One, but the Navman comes with speed camera's built in. Also, you can buy a £60 unit to attach on and you have live traffic updates with no subscription (it uses the Traffic Master network).

Tom Tom has two or three VERY ANNOYING bugs.

1: If it goes out of synch (looses sat coverage), and the battery is low, it can take FOREVER to get back online - so useless in low battery mode.

2: In above situ, plugging in doesnt help - still takes ten or fifteen min to recover.

3: If the battery dies completely, it can take a good 20 min to get it back on when using the car charger to power it.

4: If it crashes, sometimes you need to wait on the battery to drain completely before it will work again (even factory reset wont work)...

I have a lot of experience with the Tom Tom Go 501.
