I have convinced her we need a new telly 32" Toshiba HD thing, hopefully to be picked up on Friday :D (Have to hire a van as its too big for the lizzy or MX-5 and the Porka is bust )

So the question is now: XBox360, PS3 or Wii...

I prefer the first person games on the 360 but I'm open to pursuasion...

360 all the way, however if you can get both...grab a Wii whilst your at it. Mario Galaxy should not be missed.

CoD4 on the 360, online is the biz, almost worth the entrance fee alone (connection issues aside which are inherent with online gaming anyway)
if evolution don't take care of it, redesign it

Ever since the original XBox came out with the fiddly gamepad, I've just never clicked with it. I know you can get aftermarket pads, and the 360 pad isn't quite as bad... but, I'll stick to Sony (was a Sega guy before PS/PS2/PS3). Besides, if you spec a 360 to the same level as a 60Gb PS3... then the price advantage of the 360 disappears.

Never liked any of the past Nintendo products, and I've never seen a game for Wii that has made me want to buy one either.

The kids have got PSP's, so we've just bought a PS3 for their X-mas... as it links up with the PSP's (think rear view mirror on driving games... stream video to them in their room, etc). You get the similar wireless and movement sensing stuff in the controllers as Wii, Blue Ray, music streaming from home PC, and the online gaming (whilst still infant), is free. The catalogue of games has increased a fair bit in the last few months also.

PS. Richard... RicherSounds have some great deals on at the moment. We just bought a new TV for the 2nd room (32" HD/Freeview Panasonic for £499). Plus, if you buy before the end of this month, you get a free 5yr warranty direct with Panasonic.

Hello

The original xbox pad was designed by Sega, hence it's most like the dreamcast pad than any other console ;)

The xbox S controller was probably the best of it's time (although I preferred the gamecube one). The 360 controller is the best available now (mainly due to it not requiring the pad to float so you can get get your thumbs in the right place, yes sixaxis, I mean you!)

Aftermarket pads are all crap, all of them, crap. Console manufacturers spend a whole bunch of cash on R&D for control pads, then some monkey comes along, rips of the design with a few changes to make it legal, and release it. The original will always be the best. (not to mension the quality...)
The playstation/ps2/ps3 pad is about the worst designed controller out there. People only 'like' them because they've used them for so long, and that's before I start on the dead zones on the analogue sticks which I believe are still noticable on ps3 (that is to say, the amount you can move the stick before the console detects any movement)

You are right about the ps3 vs 360 cost, although the 60gb ps3 no longer exists, and since PAL ps2 backwards compatibility was gimped in the first place, the 60gb really only has a USB hub, card reader most will never use, and that extra 20gb over the 40gb one.
With the dualshock 3 ps3 due out (already in Japan) i'm holding off for a ps3.
The 360 has maybe 20x the amount of decent games compared to the ps3, and all the older great multiformat stuff (Oblivion..) is cheaper on 360. Ps3 needs a year and some more exclusive games before it becomes good.

I have a slightly older Toshiba HD LCD and it's been ace. Only issues are the remote is a bit slower than you'd like (occassionally I press standby to switch it on, wait a few seconds, do it again, then realise I just put the TV on and off again :) and no proper widescreen over VGA/D-Sub.

If you buy a HDTV, the Wii won't look too amazing on it (due to upscaling). If you want it to look half decent, a Wii component cable is a MUST (basically making it prog scan, or EDTV as Nintendo like to call it)

I'm just tight!

Not found a Sony at a decent price that isn't a 1st gen Bravia, watching them makes me feel ill... Even normal telly pixilates like mad and anything moving quickly (Like the Sony Bravia Bouncy Ball Ads!) just explodes into blocks!

I skipped the Dreamcast, which probably accounts for my dislike of that pad. I got cramps very easily playing my Bro's Xbox (like after 45mins)... whereas I can sit and play GT4 all night long without suffering too much. I guess game-pad comfort is subjective.

You can still buy 60Gb PS3's btw (just), while they run the stock down they are only about £20 more than a 40Gb when you look at the packages. And, if you get a 60Gb you can still play 'some' PS2 games... but you need to upgrade the firmware on your machine 1st...

Agreed.. another year under it's belt and the catalogue should be good (and the developers should have worked out how to get the most out of it). You just need to look at FIFA & F1 games to see how much difference a well developed games makes when the console hasn't changed.

Andy.
