But that doesn't mean the Xbox won't follow shortly....

No competition, XBox 360. I have used one and I like it. Also I like the Classic XBox. The few times I have used a PS2 I haven't liked it at all. I know the PS3 is better in every way but I'm still determined to go for the 360.
Wii doesn't even get a look in.

Nope. The Elite doesn't have HD-DVD, only bigger hard drive and it's black (120gb rather than 20gb)RICHARDHUMBLE wrote:£300 squid... dunno what the benefit is, HDDVD and bigger harddrive?
Gotham is amazing, 360 is the way forward (for now)
If you are a 1st person shooter (since you mensioned Halo) or racing game fan i'd personally say avoid the Wii as it's not the console for either of those.
Technically the Ps3 is a cheaper console if you consider the integrated BluRay player (if you'd use it!) and it will eventually have a good number of great games.
If you are desperate for many great games now, buy a 360.
Racing game wise, Project Gotham (4 is better, but 3 is cheap and still damn good, I ranked up about 80 hours play time, and 97% completeness on it!)
Forza Motorsport is decent also, and probably a good alternative to the ps3s eventual Gran Turismo unless you plan to invest MANY hours in the game.
If you go for a 360 (and your TV has a HDMI port) make sure you get one with HDMI on the box. These are the newer models (about 3 months old) so you likely would get one, but some stores may still have old stock. HDMI is available on all 3 360s (Arcade-was Core, Pro-was Premium and Elite)
The picture quality is much better, and it does some wacky upscaling of normal DVDs making them look better than a regular DVD player, which I don't think it does over component.

First person shooters and Driving games are basically all I play, so thats good news! Not going to need a blue-ray and thanks for the tip on HDMI!
Its going to have to wait a little bit as I'm currently undergoing a cash flow rethink, but not too long!!
