NLC: Feel sick and faint every time I see a doctor

Post by tenkfeet » Fri Dec 14, 2007 9:55 pm

Maybe not the thing for a car forum but hey .

Does anybody else feel sick and faint when they see doctors? I had to have a little operation today under local , I was a bit nervous beforehand but the op itself wasn't too uncomfortable other than the feeling faint and nausea before they had even started . Afterwards I was feeling better untill the doc came in again to see me, its like something in my subconcious says :puke .The last few times I have been to the doc its been the same which I thought was a fear of needles even when they were not being used.

Its like the motion sickness when Mac took me out as a pax at Teeside ,really debilitating :puke I asked the staff , they tend to say typical man and call it white coat syndrome . So typical men of SE give me your thoughts , the internet has not answered my queries. I am contemplating maybe seeing a hypnotist.

B.t.w. The staff at the Southern General have been superb and very patient . They do a difficult job well. :thumbsup

Actually just like a Lotus ,removing the little fatty lump in my neck turned into a bigger job when they had to get the dremel out .

Strangely....I almost fainted during a first aid course when watching a video on accidents (with fake blood) and info on aids, hep c etc but in a real life scenario I'm pretty good in a crisis...

So it's all psychological...

My medical phobia is dentists. For the past 20 or so years I haven't been able to even stay in the same room if anyone even spoke about going to the dentist, never mind actually going to one. Unfortunately for me I need to see one to get stuff done and am only managing to cope with the help of a m8 who is a clinical psychologist and his colleague who is a cognative behavioral therapist. It was only on the 3rd visit that I managed to sit in the chair!!

A bit of mind-games really. Mentally going through what will happen and what I will feel and the what I will think about when I start StReSsInG and also desensitisation exercises . Eg I had mentally reherse going to the reception in one session before I was physically able to go to the surgery front door. Same thing for going inside and looking in the waiting room. Think I drove to the carpark, walked to the door and went into the reception room about 3 times before I met the dentist, then another 3 times before I went in the chair. So far.... 2 fillings and a couple of injections later... it has been ok. No pain whatsoever, but then part of me thinks that obviously the next time is bound to hurt. Then again, its not really pain thats the worry its the whole experience of it all.

Trying to find any photos of when my appendix was taken out in the middle of the Borneo jungle in '64, by a half drunk Scottish Naval Lt Cmdr Doctor attached to us on patrol, with something resembling a Swiss Army knife, and a bottle of whisky.

Definately could post a photo of the resulting scar after it turned sceptic.

I had a vaguely similar reaction under local at the GP when getting a mole removed. It's physiologically the body's reaction to invasive action, affects some more than others. GP and nurse were both not surprised and also very supportive.

a) nothing to be worried / ashamed of

b) get over it and enjoy the festive season!

This thread is useless without pics.

I've had a few good 'falls'.

Road bike race, I knew the route and the next turn was a sharp right, rest of the group didnt. I turned right at full pelt, they didnt. Result. I hit the rear wheel of the guy to my right and flew across the road landing on my right knee/leg ripping it open to the bone.

Much pain.
I managed to get home and empty a boot full of blood that had accumulated, down the cludgie.

Made me feel queasy.

Feckin hell having that done anywhere would be extreme, in the jungle is just nuts . Do you recall what kind of whisky it was? Might get some for medicinal purposes.

Deciding the drive in was a waist of time I told him to just stitch it up , having a tooth brush rub up and down the wound I picked out the lumps of stone myself...... The doc offered a anesthetic needle in to numb the pain , I refused as I don't like needles much and told him to stitch it as it was.....

I was rather proud of that scar, as stupid as the whole thing was.
Noops, reminds me of a scene from Rambo when he stitched his arm ?

When I am in pain I want drugs , dont care what anything . I had diazapan and morphine when I crashed my bike , I wasn't in much pain but thought I would play it safe . Which reminds me 45 mins and I can pop some pain killers.

I'm with the dentist phobia.

Had a 'butcher' as a kid (he got struck off eventually) which put me off for life.

I haven't been for 20 years  but look after my teeth and, fingers crossed, no problems so far.

IMHO I think there's a lot of unnecessary dental work gets done anyway, judging from the stories I've heard...always remember as a kid my dentist was the only person I knew who drove an Esprit and had leather couches in the waiting room, and I used to wonder where he got the money :)

One of Skye's babies suffered an horrific head injury when a naughty toy inserted a screw in its head

Luckily Skye was able to cope with the stressful situation in a caring way that Florence Nightingale would have been proud of.
