they use FM200 now. but the best route is a low oxygen environment. No o2 = no fire can start.
Halon is not only old hat but illegal - kind off kills people very quickly

No it doesn't halon is perfectly safe. The reason they banned it was because bunny huggers don't like it as it eats ozone

Though i think it can give off nasty stuff when you burn it

Cool didnt know that.

We had always told that we had seconds to exit the machine and comms rooms otherwise we would be dead but I guess that would be complete lack of oxygen.

I would find out exactly what they use for fire fighting as some stuff they use is quite lethal where as other stuff you can wander around going WTF...

Halon it self is pretty safe as it interferes with the combustion process and the fire just goes out. But being a CFC it does have a rather pretty green flame when it meets a flame and as a nice side effect it produces mustard gas. Top fun. So in a big fire i would still get the fook out of there due to the byproducts of the chemical reaction. But despite the fact you work in IT i still think your own common sense would say leave sharpish.

CO2 is the one that makes you quite dead quite quickly.

The real fun one is N2 smothering which is rarely used as it has a wonderful side effect that in a pure N2 atmosphere you don't feel breathless like you do with CO2 you just go to sleep permanently.

That said halon has been banned by the bunny huggers so i would find out exactly what they are using for smothering as that knowledge might just save your ass or someone elses ass in times of crisis.
