advice for buying a smashed s2
my friend wants to purchase an s2 but doesnt have stacks of cash to do it. he has spotted one at the local scrapper for £4600. i havent seen it, but i heard alarm bells when he said the price. i thought it must be hit sore for that price. it has been hit at the front, so immediately it needs new lights, clam, radiator, wheels suspension and so on. im trying to get an idea what this would cost cos i think it will be a few grand. he thinks the chassis can be welded?? i know it comes glued, so is this a rule?
i think he would be better buying an s1, but he likes the newer shape.
clam £500? before gel coat?
new chassis frame £????
any input would be welcome. i think he's gonna put down a deposit on thursday.

If the chassis needs fixing then walk away. Not worth it.
He owuld be better off getting a tatty but running S1 and doing that up or its going to cost him more in fixing a broken (And possibly irreparable) S2.
Or save the pennies for now...
my 2p.

At the very least, it will need clams. It may also need the crash structure which is bonded onto the bulkead. This is not cheap, or easy to fix.
If the suspension pickup points have been damaged, you're into nightmare territory.
Unless he's got experience, or friends with experience of rebuilding crashed elises, it may proove more expensive than buying one that already works....

wheels and suspension should have alarm bells ringing
if the chassis / wishbone mount is torn the car is a total loss
i looked at quite a few that where cat d but with damaged chassis as most insurer accesors dont understand the elise
i have also seen repaired/cocked up welded chassis cars for sale so beware its a big no no
i opted for one that was a cat c but hit square on the nose so no chassis damage
front clam , crash box rad rad housing bonnet windscreen ect ect it had torn clam fixing nr the windscreen and that stuctue is bonded like the crashbox but can be a real easy repair the crash box is quite hard to remove and then to clean up the chassis before fitting a new one
the odds and sods also add up to overall cost, factor in ball joints wheel bearings and rack refurb if the wheels show any dammage
check out the battery even if undamaged ( they break with impact but s2 in the boot ? ) as the car will off been lying around for some time
the elise is not cheap to repair but e bay is your friend get a new crash box thou as i was offered quite a few so called repaired ones ( s2 i think where approx £650 s1 £500 )
s2 parts tend to cost a lot more than a s1
i enjoyed rebuilding mine but a s2 car is a better car to start from imo as any faults a s1 can have ,mines had them eg sill pipe ,red hose ,fuel pump, rack, alarm, toe links ,exhaust, ect ect ect
if he is not sure walk away
