Not a gimmick at all IMO. Purists will tell you to keep sources, power supplies, pre-amps and power amps as far away from each other as possible, but I was playing with the Arcam Solos (the CD and the DVD theater versions) over xmas and I have to say they are as good as Diva separates of similar money. Plus they are neat and tidy one-boxers so would do nicely for a bedroom or somewhere you don't want a full rack of kit.

Arcam Solo isn't bad - BUT !!
if you only want CD reproduction (ie don't need the radio) i can do you a much better sounding system for the same money !

P.S. the Fatman valve i-Pod docks are ace !!
Just use Apple lossless or some of the other better quality copiers rather than MP3
