LOTRDC winning S1 Exige race car - Hofmann’s chassis number 001
After much deliberation I’ve decided to put my massively successful race car up for sale. It has been the utterly dominant package in the LOTRDC race series this year and won almost every race. It competed in and finished the Britcar 24 hour race at Silverstone (running as high as 4th overall) and lapped the entire Heritage GT field at Spa Francorchamps. Over a lap this is most probably THE quickest Elise based car in existence and it is also very reliable. The car is very confidence inspiring and easy to drive, probably the nicest handling Exige there is. Statistics this car has clocked up in the last year are here:
Number of races
16
Number of race finishes
14
Number of drivers
5
Number of race miles
2210
Number of wins
10

This car started out life as a genuine S1 Exige road car and after 17K miles got converted to NA Honda power by Maidstone Sports Cars. After another 30K miles of everyday road use, during which is was 100% reliable and took 2nd place in Class in the Donington park Tuner GP event, it was stripped to a bare tub and rebuilt as the ultimate race car to compete in the inaugural year of the LOTRDC series. Absolutely no expense was spared and every moving part was refreshed or replaced. In the process it got upgraded to supercharged spec (and made record power on Abbey motorsport’s rolling road) to meet the Class C LOTRDC regulations. The car proved to be the most competitive in the field from the very first race and took wins at Snetterton, Brands Hatch, Oulton Park and Silverstone but unfortunately was hit out of the lead at Castle Combe where it did claim fastest lap. Prior to the Silverstone 24 hour race in September it went through another phase of being stripped back and improved to make it competitive at top level GT racing. Running in normally aspirated trim (for fuel consumption reasons) it qualified 2nd in Class and ran as high as 4th overall before fuel pump failure slowed it’s progress but it did go on to finish. After that race it was stripped back yet again and refreshed. Since then it has won every race it’s competed in including 3 at Spa Francorchamps and two at Brands Hatch. In the Heritage GT race at Spa this car lapped the entire field of 54 cars and at Brands Hatch it won the LOTRDC handicap race from the very back of the grid. Over the course of the year, well over 2000 hours have been spent on rebuild and improvements.
If you want to win in the LOTRDC championship in 2008 this is THE package to do it in.
A brief outline of the spec is below but I’m sure there are a few details I may have missed. The car can weigh nearly 700kg un-ballasted, in supercharged form and currently runs 310bhp to meet the LOTRDC power/weight regs, although there are probably a few more horses available with an engine re-map if the car is run outside LOTRDC. The purchaser will be given support and driver training at a UK test/track day of their choice to familiarise themselves with the car and learn how to get the most from it. If the purchaser isn’t completely happy with the car after the first test then they can have their money back and walk away. The car will be sold with a Hofmann’s chassis plate, number 001, for historical reference and to ensure it retains its value in the future.
Specification:
Body: Modified Exige clams with various aerodynamic improvements, Reverie CF wing (only weighs 1.5kg and was designed by aerodynamic expert Simon McBeath so really works), special modified front splitter with front diffuser sections, special modified rear undertray and diffuser (makes a big difference to downforce and stability), Zenon light setup with 6 zenon bulbs. The engine cover is lightweight glass fibre and non-vented to give better airflow to the rear wing. The windscreen is heated and has also been made quick release along with the entire windscreen surround. This allows easy access to the electrics and pedal box and also allowed me to take some weight out. The roof has been modified to feed air to the engine (air from the side scoops is dirty) and also to provide some ventilation to the cabin. It has ventilation from the front and rear wheel wells to cool the brakes and CV’s and also to reduce the drag. There are two sets of doors which come with the car, one standard set for LOTRDC and another lightweight setup for GT racing. Lots of attention has been paid to both ventilating the engine bay and reducing drag.
Suspension: Newly re-finished wishbones, zinc coated and painted for longevity, meticulously prepared Nylon bushes, GT rear uprights with uprated bearings, front uprights are all hard anodized in black (helps detect any cracks) bearings all rebuilt with high temp grease and I run hardened steel drive flanges as the standard ones are prone to failure, Nitron 3-way dampers specially developed to my specification (which has been developed over many thousands of miles of track and damper-dyno work) using all the best internals and oil with Eibach springs and my helper spring arrangement, rod ended toe links, all ball joints and bushes have been inspected/replaced post the 24 hour race, lowered dampers mounts, special 1-off uprated ARB and bump-steer adjustable steering arms.
Engine: Honda K20 with JRSCC (Jackson Racing Supercharger) on ITR manifold, TODA cams, Reverie induction which utilises the roof scoop, new link-up exhaust manifold and back box which routes over the subframe and meets the quietest of noise regs (had it built for the 24 hour race as the noise limit is very low). This back box/manifold arrangement is not only good for power but also improves reliability by taking heat away from delicate areas. This exhaust setup also allowed the car to run at the notoriously noise conscious Bedford Autodrome without problem (admittedly with a lower rev limit). The engine is always run on the very best Silkolene oils and high octane petrol.
Chassis: The chassis is standard Lotus Exige but is fitted with a light and strong T-45 steel 4-point roll cage, with integral harness bar. The rear subframe was shot blasted at the start of the year to remove the heavy galvanized laer (saves ~4kg) and painted to resist corrosion. The windscreen surround has been converted so that it is quick release, allowing for easy access to the pedal box and wiring under the dashboard in the event of any problem whilst endurance racing.
Brakes: AP 304 discs all round, AP calipers all round with 42mm pistons at the front and 36mm pistons at the rear (different pistons sizes to optimize front/rear balance), rears are new and the fronts were rebuilt at the start of the year with all new pistons and seals and vapor bead blasted to bring up to as new condition, AP bias valve for fine brake bias adjustments running Pagid RS14 pads, braided hoses and big bore master cylinder (keeps the pedal travel short even with the larger rear calipers). Front brakes are vented from the airbox and there are vents in the rear of the car which cool the rear brakes and CV joints for long distance racing.
Interior: Carbon fibre MOG seat, 4 point roll cage to my own design, Shcroth harnesses, quick release MOMO steering wheel, plumbed in FEV gas fire extinguisher, Cartek battery cut out, Spa guages, Rollcentre lap-timer, Lightweight dry cell battery, all mod-cons stripped out. I’ve even gone to the extent of cutting back all redundant wires in the wiring loom to save weight! Cockpit ventilation has been improved with roof vents and vents from the front crash box ducted straight into the cabin. I have fitted a quick-release heated screen to keep to windscreen clear during any wet races.
Fuel system: Lightweight, foam filled fuel cell with internal scavenge and high pressure pumps, 71ltr capacity and weights 6kg less than std tank. There are no surge issues with this tank, it can pump enough fuel for well over 400bhp and as the pumps are integral it removes the necessity for unsightly, heavy and over-complicated additional swirl pots and fuel pumps. I also have a 15ltr auxiliary fuel tank setup which I had made for the 24hour race which is included if wanted.
Wheels: TMR forged alloy (lightest available).
