MGF Tiptronic engine...

Post by Ardiem » Wed Jan 16, 2008 12:29 am

My brother is planning on selling his 2000 MGF paddleshift but it's a bit of shed. The engine is fine though and has only done 20K. Not sure if it's a 135 or 160 version but whichever it is, it's more than the 120bhp version sitting in the back of my S2. Incidentally, there is nothing wrong with my engine, I just want more power.

Taking cost of the engine out of the equation, is it feasible to swap the two engines? Would the paddleshift gearbox make things horribly complicated? Would I be better forgetting it and looking at a Honda engine if I want more power?

Opinions, conjectures and sarcasm all equally welcome.

Really? I'd heard they were quite good.... :damnfunny

I wouldnt bother with swapping the engine TBH. If it's a 160 bhp VVC, then you'll need to to do work on the loom and swap out the ECU too. If its a 135, you can easily achieve that just by doing some porting on your elise head.

If you want to get fancy and it's a VVC engine, my plan of attack would be to convert the head to a non-vvc spec, get it ported and put some mild cams on it. 170bhp would be easily achievable as the VVC head has bigger valves compared to a normal K.

Cheers and :welcome

Hi there

First off - dont shift the engine out of the mgshed

If you want to look at sorting the engine out, SLS (scottish lotus specialists) are about to start offering some very interesting engine mods.

Hopefully Ali will have these out in time for the website launch, but the stage 1 will increase the basic 118bhp effort to 150 approx bhp.

To run better cams and increase power further requires a re-mappable ECU, but thats in the works also!

If you want more info fell free to drop me a pm

Triptronic/stepspeed mgf is a 1.8 k series thats only 120bhp as the box cannot handle anymore power and is rather slow with that gearbox fitted
put the money towards 170 bhp with a c/r box after that it gets very expensive bhp for ££ cost
spend your money on real improvements ie prt mod , oil cooler then ported head , cams ect the S2 downpipe isnt too bad upto 170 bhp and a lot better than a 4 stud S1 version imo
