Dom, when was the last time you were in an original Mini (I think I can guess..) Did you feel any more safe?
Guarantee you that the Matiz would have protected you much more than the Min in a shunt.

Safest car in the world is one with explosives on the fuel tank rigged up to triggers on the front and rear bumpers and a big spike on the steering wheel, if everyone drove them there would be zero accidents! modern cars detatch the drivers from the road and thats no fun thats why people buy silly sports & old cars.

I take my hat of to Tata for seeing a gap in the indian market and filling it. Do you honestly think that the car will be less safe than a family of 4 on a motorbike, none of whom will be wearing anything safer than a shirt?
Yes, by European standards it'll be substandard, but with so little on it there is so little to go wrong. You won't need to take it back to your specialist dealer for £70+/hr labour, you'll just fix it at home. As its just an engine with seats it probably won't breakdown either.
And I don't think many motorists in India really give a hoot about the how many starts it will (won't) score in the EuroNCAP tests

If it ever comes to the UK, Tata will inflate the price to £4000 and exploit us for a change

No. Agree 100%
I firmly believe the fact that cars are more protective - and also that they generally require far less attention and input to drive quickly than, say, 20yrs ago - is directly responsible for perceived poorer driving standards today. And manufacturers continue to provide drivers with more tools of that ilk - eg. radar braking control.

Plus the deskilling that new legislation seems determined to persue

...but don't want to get O/T.

The sense of fear was down to the driver on that occassion

Not at all mate... couldn't agree more!!!

TATA with small car... big mistake. there is no space in india to fit more cars. there are already too many on the road.
tata cars; we have had 3 tata vehicles at home in the last 15 years or so; and all of them SH*T!!
their turbo vehicles were even worse.
wonder how the small car will sell. probably a lot of people would buy in india.

Well they still build the 1954 Morris Oxford there, renamed the Hindustan Ambassador.
Their top of the range car is the Hindustan Contessa, a reconstituted 1972 Vauxhall Victor!

ambassador is still quite a common car there. mostly taxis though. some old men think the car is as strong as a battle tank.

they changed the headlight after so many years
contessa has been extinct for sometime now. dont remember seeing one in the last 10 yrs.
the contessa classic was the one to be seen in. it was very different from the regular contessa. (it had seat belts

) it was actually my dad had one in 1990, for a year or so.

apparently there is an export version of it for the UK market. never seen one here though.
all i know is, it has alloy wheels
