Anti Roll bars

Post by Rich H » Sat Jan 19, 2008 11:36 am

Hey guys,

I know what an Anti-roll bar does, but how does the balance of roll bar stiffness front to rear affect handling?

I have managed to scrounge a 944 rear anti roll bar and fittings that will pretty much bolt straight on.

Bolt it on and see, it will effect the handeling wither it's in a desirable way or not is another matter, it may make it more planted at the back and give make it more planted at the rear giving you more understeer before the back end looses grip and dumps you in a hedge, but thats a personal preferance.

In F1 I think if they want less push (less understeer) then they soften the front ARB as it gives more initial grip on turn in. So I would imagine stiffening it would push more on the tyres and would make understeer more easy to achieve...

...unless anyone knows differently 8)

OK Thanks

I thought a stiffer rear ARB (ie adding one) would mean more rear grip on dry corners so more understeery (Or less oversteery) but in the wet the back will break away earlier as it will outstrip the available grip quicker.

So more understeer in the dry and more oversteer in the wet, does that sound right? Or is it the other way around? I don't know anymore...

I also have a plan to swap the front bar for a bigger 944 one too which should restore some of the balance but reduce the wallow on cornering.

I'm going for the Nizzy version of slap it on and see what happens...
