Performance through lightweight . . . but NLC!

Post by dezzy » Thu Jan 17, 2008 11:04 pm

Got my new work laptop the other day . . . Been needing something smaller and lightweight as I travel a lot more these days than I used to and my old one was just becoming impossible to use on the move. Not quite as thin as the new MacBook Air, but I'm so impressed with my new Toshiba Portege

This is it compared to my existing Dell work laptop (huge!) and my MacBook in the background. MacBook is 13.3", Dell is 15" and new Toshiba is 12". It's so light I can't believe there's a 150GB hard drive in it!

The pictures don't do full justice to just how small it is compared to the others!

I've got one the same - must be the older version though as it doesnt have the internal DVD drive. Looks great but is sooooo slow if you try to do anything with it

Seems to be okay so far. Will find out once all my development software and Oracle installed. It's higher spec than my Dell, so must be faster than that! 2GB of RAM and I'm still on XP so I'm expecting it to be ok.

I have one of my own and one for work. I'm just in the process of transferring stuff from old work one to new work one then it's going to someone else

I have 2 macbooks... one black, one white.

Can't imagine why you'd want a Windows laptop when you already have a Macbook Dezzy..

If you need to run XP/Dev stuff, try VMWare Fusion for OS X. £70 for a license and it really, really, really works. I use XP under VMWare and haven't booted a 'real' windows box for anything since moving to mac 10 months ago. Newer macbooks can take up to 4GB Ram, so you can even leave windows running in the backgound and just ab between OSes. Awesome!

Only reason is for work. MacBook is my personal one and work only buy Windows machines. I could definitely use a Mac at work but I don't think we'll ever talk them into letting us get them :(
