Not in the best of moods this week as my family dog of 16 years was put down last week and I check my bank account today to find some hardworking criminal has managed to clone my debit card and withdraw £850 over the last 3 days.
mini rant over

It's quite a common problem - the bank should reimburse - in particular if you used a shell petrol station with that card in recent months as there were a bunch of dodgy PIN pads that had been hacked to record the PIN entry and the important data for cloning the magnetic stripe - not enough to make a clone card that will fool another Chip&PIN device, but enough to fool the cash point.
There are plenty of skimmers attached to cash points also, along with button cameras to record the PIN entry. Top tip - when you receive your new card, change your PIN immediately (yes, there have been inside jobs where they send out a PIN that can be deduced from the card number ...) - change it to something you can enter with one hand on the keyboard without moving (i.e. so you can put all four fingers on the pad and enter the number without lifting off). Finally, always place your other hand over the top while entering the PIN - this reduces the chance of a spotter or button camera reading your PIN.
This still won't protect you from dodgy PIN pads - sorry - but at least it will protect you from the far more common skim and video scam.
Cheers,
Robin

Happened to me before too. The bank pay you back as it's their security that has been compromised.
I actually phoned one of the companies that stuff had been bought from using my card and got them to give me the shipping address! Was considering paying them a visit, but thought better of it!

It was reported to the police but I dunno if anything ever came of it. Probably just went in the fraud file. I think they prefer to go after the big fish.[/quote]

The same thing happened to me. On a plus point the card company refunded all the cash and left me with the2% cash back

Cheers guys. Spent a good 2.5 hours in the bank this morning (well two banks because of course the first one didn't have an employee of the correct calibre on duty) pretty helpful but had to close my entire account, open a new one, got sh*t loads of people to phone about changing my direct debits etc.. changing where my salary goes etc.. grrrr and could be 6 weeks before I see my money come back.
The dude told me about a machine they'd realised had been tampered with at Buckstone Shops: waited for the guy to collect his winnings, slammed him in jail and deported him back to Romania.

The Bank should have been able to automatically transfer all Direct/Debits, standing orders etc to the new account ... you shouldn't have to do it yourself!

Like I say, cover your PIN entry with your other hand and it will reduce your chances of being caught by a skimming cashpoint. Nothing you can do about tampered Chip & PIN devices, but these are much harder to organise (can only be done with an inside job in the distribution chain for the devices, rather than a ned in a hoodie slapping the skimmer & mini camera onto the cashpoint).
Oh, and it is the bank's fault - they should be fixing this all for you painlessly - I would suggest you might as well move banks seeing as how they've forced you to close it, but they're all as bad as one another really
Cheers,
Robin

Cheers for the Advice guys. Also they won't even look at the fraud case for 10 to 14 days.... grrrrrr..... Anything I can do? As far as they're concerned I've withdrawn the money and couldn't care less.
They keep refering to the account "I claim has been defrauded"
