Hayfever ? (FALC)
Right i'm 34 and have never suffered from hayfever, yet in the past week or so my eyes have been itchy as hell and i've been wanting to claw them out.
Every pharmasist seems to think it's hayfever, and yet i have no symptoms other than itchy eyes.
It's got so bad i can't wear my contacts anymore, and even with just my glasses on i'm clawing away like there's no tomrorow. Last time i had similar itchy eyes it turned into an eye infection and some doctor loving later it was sorted.
Does anyone else get *just* itchy eyes from hayfever ? Have the sufferers on here all had it for years ? Just seems strange as it doesn't seem to get worse when im outside, and it doesnt get better when i take loratadine (Galphram is the brand name)
Help before i gouge my eyes out with a spoon.
Cheers in advance

Re: Hayfever ? (FALC)
Sounds like hayfever to me.
I sometimes get similar symptoms (although usually accompanied by a blocked nose).
I only recently started getting (maybe 3 or 4 years ago) and don't tend to suffer too bad.
You could try getting some different antihistamines (Benadryl or something similar) and if the symptoms get better you'll know it's hayfever (gf works in pharmacy and recommends this). You could try eye drops too (eg Opticrom).
Good luck

Re: Hayfever ? (FALC)
I'm allergic to house dust, and often I just get itchy eyes from it. I use Cetirizine (also available in galpharm brand for 60p or so for a week in asda) though that's mainly as the loratadine messes me up as bit.
From my experience though, it takes a day or 2 for the antihistamine to build up in your system so keep taking it and see what you're like in a couple of days.
If you're no better seek out some cetirizine and try again...

Re: Hayfever ? (FALC)
In my experience, some people do get one particular symptom worse than others, so it could be hayfever. My eyes get bad in the evening - is it worse then? I used to be prescribed eye drops called Rapitil, which were fantastic. Don't really need them now as it's not as bad as usual this year.
However, it could be a dust allergy as that can often only affect the eyes. My friend got to the point that his dust allergy combined with wearing contacts every day meant that he could end up losing his sight if he continued to wear contacts. He ended up getting laser eye surgery as he didn't like glasses. He still has the dust allergy but at least doesn't make it worse by putting contacts in his eyes now.
I'd go see an optician rather than a doctor as they should know far more about your eye and can have a better look around with their equipment.

Sympathise mate, Verian gets the same problem though not as bad as that.
Rape seed is her worst bête noire, but yours could just be hay fever which is set off by a high pollen count.

I've had hayfever for a longtime and it's actually got better as the i've got older. I used to suffer with my eyes quite badly, but these days it's just my nose, but taking Clarityn helps me alot in the summer. I'm also allergic to something else - all year round - which i'm seeing the ENT people for at the moment. Still don't know what it is.
You'll need to take the tablets for a few days before they start to work then keep taking them. I'm affected from late June to early September. I also wear contacts without any problems.

Re: Hayfever ? (FALC)
I saw a report on the news a week or two ago, saying that the pollen count this year is particularly high. I have suffered from hay fever for years, although in recent years it has been better. This year, I have had really itchy eyes, and been sneezing a bit more. Usually opticrom helps, but not this year. I have in the past tried hay fever tablets (since Triludan was stopped (which worked)). I have tried Zirtex, Piritiez, Benedril etc.. and found little advantage, other than feeling even sleepier than usual.
Anyway, by Saturday, i was so sick of my itchy eyes, (and Louise nagging me to do something about them) I went into boots. End result was that I was given a nasal spray (similar to beconase) which so far has worked very well,... no more itchy eyes. See how the tablets work Martin, if not effective, then the nasal sprays may be worth a try.

Rape seed is a nightmare although my allergies and hay fever can vary from day to day. One day I could be rolling about in the stuff and I'll be fine, the next I just need to look at it and my nose starts to stream and my eyes get itchy and or also start to stream to the point where it's difficult to see where I'm going.
as said above it might be an infection so if it doesn't clear up then best to get it checked.

Re: Hayfever ? (FALC)
In case anyone cares
I've not yet clawed my eyes out and BENADRYL one a day (containing cetirizine) seems to be working for me. Cetrizine seems to be one of the 2nd gen treatments and seems to be doing the job.
So much so that I've got my contacts in today and, although it's not 100% comfy, I can at least keep them in without screaming and looking for the nearest spoon to gouge them out. It also means i no create scars on my nose where i forgot to take my glasses off before removing crash helmet
Thanks to all for the advice - still amazes me there aren't more hayfever related suicides though

The doc prescribed me eye drops and Loratadine, seems to have stopped it for now.
