Police 'crackdown'

Got stopped this morning on Wallace street, Glasgow after coming off the Kingston Bridge. The policeman asked me if I knew why he had pulled me over and I suggested it might be to do with my front number plate, or rather lack of one. He confirmed my suspicions and then took my details and said he had to give me a fixed penalty (£60) but tried to balance it by saying I was lucky as I wasn't getting points. He would normally have issued a warning but they have a crackdown on cars meeting all the regulations at the moment and no front number plate would mean I would miss detection from front facing cameras such as some speed and ANPR cameras. If my car was stolen, they'd have more chance of detecting it apparently, so it was for my own good...

Anyway, to sum it up, if your number plate has been knocked off by enormous speed bumps for the 37th time - get it fixed smartish, especially if you're driving in the Glasgow area. I couldn't really complain as mine came off in April (again) and I got fed up shelling out £18 everytime I needed a new number plate (about every couple of months - the only way into my estate is over a massive speed bump) so for me it is cheaper to get a fixed penalty three times a year a year than it is to buy number plates.

Anyone have any suggestions make number plates stay on?

3/4 sized plate and B&Q superstrong velcro

Standard font and spacing and IMHO doens't scream "illegal" - but im aware that it is not legal, but the legal one won't stay on over my speedbumps in my estate.

is there not some daft law, that its only a fine if you dont show a number plate, but they can fine you AND give you points if you have an illegal one???

the stick on front plates dont have that issue

S1 and S2 will have different mounting, I doubt if many S1's have that plinth on any more, so I just mount mine higher with screws, or double sided tape.

My plan is to go stick on at some point on top of the front clam I keep my broken front plate in the car as added evidence "It just* fell off officer look at the big cracks on my clam" and all I have ever had is the wee form you have to get stamped at an MOT garage.



*"just" for me as I am a little laid back can mean anything from 5 mins to 5 months.

Yep - apparently you can get 3 points on your licence for an illegal plate and only a fine for a missing one.

I tried the 'just' happened approach but that's when he launched into his crackdown speil. Standing outside the court now about to pay the fine... ah the wonders of Android.

Stick ons are illegal so expect points and fine for them. Pop your just fallen off number plate in the front window and you should get a producer only (if that to show you have reattached).

Surely if you have your number plate in the front window then you are displaying a front number plate. Don't think there are any regulations as to 'where' the numberplate has to be as long as it's visable from the front.

If the number plate had been knocked off 2 minutes beforehand would that have made a difference? Probably not. Even if I had said it happened 2 minutes ago I would have still been done for driving the car illegally regardless of whether I was aware it had come off or not. Sticking it in the front window wasn't going to make a difference as the policeman specifically mentioned speed cameras and ANPR cameras being unable to read the plate as the reason for the fixed penalty.

Makes you want to rip the number plates off the police cars and telling them 'Now you're driving illegally, help yourself to a fixed penalty.'

Apparantly velco is also illegal.

Bolt it on but higher up so that if it catches it won't rip your clam off with it.

From what I've heard you can't get points for it, only a fine, but I could be wrong.

I'm sure this has been discussed before.

I have a feeling that it was said that a front number plate must be vertical. Not sure if that's true or not though.

MOT gidlines for reg plates fixing onlay stats siquer not lible to fall off.
Ther is no fall criterer for tipe of fixings.
