No way, I'm only 10-12' from my screen and that's 100", I've a 32" for TV/non-HD programmes, it's like watching the telly thru' a letterbox
Do you have to turn your head from left to right to left to right when you watch anything though... like if you were watching tennis from the umpires chair?!?

I've often heard it said that you shouldn't be any closer than 3 x the diagonal as a rough guide.

So if that's true, then with a 42" telly you'd probably want to be around 10ft + from the screen.

Nah it's only 2.5m wide, immersive, you bet, and the thing about tennis is it's filmed from one end

The 100" thing is about trying to achieve a full cinema experience, which it does admirably, not really like watching the telly, save it for films and some gaming, though that takes a bit of adjustment (my excuse anyway).

Max,

I'll cancel the order for the new tv and we'll all just come round to your place instead. 100"!! :thumbsup

If I thought the 42" wouldn't be too big I'd go for it.

As the room is smallish (9ft x 12ft) I thought about wall mounting the tv to save floor space. Only putting in a bed settee and some bean bags so floor space is is an issue. Does wall mounting add to or detract to the viewing experience?? So now you can see my issue with viewing distances. If I stick it on the largest wall the max viewing distance will be 8ft and oftentimes less. Thought about a wall bracket that pans. Then I could fit it near the corner and, when it was in use, pan the tv round so its facing 45 degrees down the room. Would increase my viewing distance a bit and keep the floor clear.

I doubt whither the Allied invasion at Dunkirk had as much thought given to it.

I'd looked at a replacement 32" ultra thin LCD with no tuner/speakers etc, there was also a bracket that purports to be 22mm so with 25-30mm TV that was <45mm. I was trying to decide whether to mount my TV behind the projector screen, so I could bring it down in front, but decided against it.

You can get very slim set-ups wall mounted. You would, however, need to minimise the connections and chase/raggle cables if you wanted a really clean look.

For you, viewing distance seated, would be a maximum of 10', i'd guess, but don't worry, go for the 42" if you can wall mount (probably cheaper and better choice than 37"), you'll soon get used to it and be trying to think of reasons to justify a bigger set-up

I would still have to recommend a smaller TV set-up and projector but it takes a bit of planning/money and a co-operative other half, mind you I didn't think I'd get away with it, but after a home demo of a mates, she was sold on the idea (never did fess up how much it cost  )

In case you haven't tried it already, turn off all the image processing that your telly is trying to do like sharpness etc.

With older/cheaper LCD TV's I find the processor is not always up for whats asked of it, that and the firm/software it uses is old and improvements are made all the time. If you turn these options off, the picture might initially feel a little softer/blurred but it should make a big difference to motion blur and such like.

Just an idea...

You're not wrong there. The 42" I like is and LG, Plasma, razor frame, freeview, 600htz, not full HD but "ready" etc etc. £399.

The Panasonic 37" is slightly smaller fame, but not much, Plasma, full HD, freeview, 100htz, best price I can get is £450 on line.

I've a guy coming tonight to have a look re what would be needed to instal etc so I'll see what he thinks re distance etc. Its a small room so need to be sure that I can live with it long term.
