Private plate help??

Post by caveman » Thu Sep 09, 2010 7:23 pm

I've recently bought a number plate privately through pistonheads. It was on retention and I now have the V778 form in my possession, which I am a nominee on. It has been signed by the Grantee, the guy I bought it from. Does anyone know if I, as the nominee, can go to the local dvla office in person to put this number plate onto my car? It's not clear in the instructions whether or not the grantee is required in person?

Such an antiquated system for this sort of thing!

Yes - Just pop into your nearest DVLA office, with the V5, MOT (if your car's over 3 years old), and tax disc - Hand them the V778, plus all this, and the job's a carrot! :thumbsup

Thanks for this. Have you done this before being the nominee rather than the original purchaser?

I did it as the nominee not purchaser and it was fine. As long as it's signed by them you're good to go.

As long as the name on the logbook is the same as the nominee name you will be able to stick it straight on.

I sold Lauras plate this way, when they guy bought the car I assumed that you could sign it over to another person like on the V5 but you cant.

I ended up just signing the Grantee part and the Nominee was filled in in thier name, not heard anything since so I assume all went well with transferring :thumbsup

Got it all done this morning...only took 10 mins! piece o pi55

As said above...the guy at dvla said as long as the grantee has signed and the name on V5 matches the nominee...no probs.

Now I just need to figure out what to fix the plates on with, sticky tabs or screws......??

Thanks for the help
