Tell me about Renault Alpine GTAs - minor Lotus connection

Post by Rich H » Wed Feb 23, 2011 11:33 am

Any one know about Renault Alpine GTAs?
Image

I like the look of them and I'm thinking of replacing the 924 eventually.
+ v6 turbo, RWD, rear engined, pretty pokey, 2+2.
- french, epensive, reliability?

The vauge Lotus connections:
They use the same UN1 gearbox as the Esprit.
Plastic shell, lightweight chassis.

Otherwise it's back to an Excel:

Speak to Craig at MMC - one of his guys just sold a mint one of these and knows them inside out. Sure he'd be happy to put you in touch.

I had one 1986-88.
It was great to drive and look at but even at 2 years old a couple of problems came up - sticky throttle made for some interesting town driving, gearbox broke (jumping out of 5th I recall), fixed on warranty thankfully, also wife (to be) had major issue when bonnet release cable parted, not a big problem in itself, but as fuel filler was in there it was not ideal situation. AA man did a break and enter, apparently not so difficult due to bendy plastic bonnet. Apparently electrics can be iffy although I never had any issues.

Must admit, I had looked at a couple of ads recently in fit of nostalgia, but not enough room in garage or enough spare time to take one on.

Good luck. :thumbsup

The old school 911 thread and then this...............

Always gets me thinking about 'classic' cars of one kind or another. I appreciate its topical given the P'heads article on the Fulvia but they are a bit of a favourite, simple mechanics but too much of a project or Alfa Giulia GTV's but some of the prices and ultimately the way I'd want one restored would be time consuming/expensive.

I have a hankering for one but I'd need to stop working and then couldn't afford it

Excel is a better looking car than the GTA (IMHO of course), and probably easier to maintain / get parts.

Pretty much the same sort of price bracket too.

GTA is more powerful through. 2.2 NA slant 4 vs 2.4 Turbo V6

Always had a major soft spot for the GTAs - 2.5 Turbo or 2.8 NA (bonkers interior & all - pure '80s graphic equaliser seperate from head unit 8) ), even more so for the A610 which replaced it - it got the 3.0 Turbo IIRC :love
