Watched it last night, why did he finish the swimming pool first!!

As Kev pointed out it's like 2 semis with a spine wall, therefore finish one side or the other and make it completely habitable, don't do half of each! Put a front door in the dividing wall and soem steps up to it and have half a house (Still massive!) until you can finance the rest.

Also why not start building AFTER the other houses/pods/boats/children had sold...

But hey the roof was vital.... to him!
Anyone else notice the headroom at the kitchen end under the (Unfinished) steelwork and the steel studs that hadn't been cutoff all over the place?
Also the bollicks about how he liked the watermarks and rusty steel...

Despite using the words 'eco-crime' and having a stupid haircut and being yet another Architect showpiecing his work, I actually didn't think he was a complete cock and even quite liked it. The pointlessly expensive folly that was the geodesic roof should have been binned at the start but it did look very impressive.

Not sure what was exactly 'eco' about it, apart from the green roof there wasn't anything in it that you wouldn't expect to find in most new builds?

Anyway he appears to have found some funds to turn it into a B&B

ye really could not understand why he didn't start the new side then move into it and then knock down half the old house etc.

He did my head in to start with but i warmed to him and his ideas.

Impressive house in the end no dout.

Weird I did wonder about the "other wing" for her family. It did look like a B&B was on the cards.

Ahhh cock.

I started writing a post referring to the obvious intent to use it for letting purposes as more of chalet type accommodation. Luxury obviously with a swimming pool but B&B or DB&B. For her visiting family, my erse, close that part of the house in the off season, dead giveaway. You would think the Planning Department would see through that straight away.

You would never have got away with lodging an application for a guest house extension of that scale in what looked like a residential estate.

My post sounded like the jealous ramblings of an architect so I binned it. Most of the projects featured, with the exception of the interior designer lass, are ego trips or advertising. Don't really get it anymore. I've hardly seen a single episode where the design is well considered, costed properly, managed and executed professionally but then that would be boring TV.

Too true

I still think the best one was the couple who refitted pubs the level of orgonisation was fantastic.

I still watch it though, I would like to build my own house one day and as a result I know geodesic domes are a bad idea :D

The only doubt was would he finish it. Interior space seems nice, not sure about the modern bit in the middle needed some sand stone detailing to tie it together. The enterance vestible was not to my taste to industrial looking.

Thought it funny that he was complaining about the banks not lending him the money and being unreasonable. Reality check

Must admit not too sure about the middle section but have to admire his no compromising approach at the beginning.

It always surprises me that people can thoroughly understimate how much a no compromise build would cost. Maybe its me but I would want to know how much I am paying for my conversion - or do these types of people not worry about cost??

I have arrived late to Grand Designs, but thanks to never ending repeats on Sky have pretty much caught up..

I am probably a bit of a traditionalist but so far there have only been a couple of properties that I would actually fancy living in. Many would be "nice to have" or "nice to visit" ... But not so sure about being in them full time.

I find myself liking them for different reasons, wither I would like to live in them is a different matter. My favorites include

The woodsmans house - He made it, didn't buy it.
The couple that refitted pubs - I loved their organisation of the build, it was also automated and thats cool.
The pet shop boys managers I have a soft spot for big white boxes

I am sure there are more but these spring to mind

I liked what he'd done with last night's house - even the industrial bit in the middle. I'd have had an underground garage though, and I'm not sure the view offered justified a £20k window. I went off Grand designs a few years ago but got quite into it last night.

I liked the no-nonsense approach to the build, its what I'd like to think I'd do (if I could afford it) when I build my own house. Doing it that way meas in 100 years time, the great, great, great grandchildren can still enjoy the place. Only thing I didn't like was plastering over all of the walls in the cottage - I'd have kept the stone.

Missed what it's going to be, started watching when they were pouring £50k extra into the ground. That, no previous experience and no architect on the job; should be a good one.

Don't the wife will end up preggers this week.
