Probably one of my favourite mini's (innocenti aside) looks great in that colour, prefer the mk2 over the mk1, still got the original mini doors etc.... And the 998 is a sweet engine, if not the most powerful. Good luck with it :thumbsup

Some nice work going on there - don't think I've such a complete floor pan off a Mini!

Looks like good quality parts, BMH and M-Machine. WIll be cracking when it's done, but scaring me that my own MK1 shell needs similar

Some nice work by Mr Crockett there ;)

Correct Jamie it's Iain who's doing the body (how did you twig that ?). Having seen his own restorations I had no doubts on giving him the job. Spent a small fortune on panels already, all good stuff though.

MkII Cooper Restoration

Post by ceejam » Fri Aug 05, 2011 7:12 am

I recognised the workshop, and the green paint on the spit then spotted the trolley underneath the shell ;)

I popped in to see Iain a few months ago and had a long chat and tour of his place. Quite impressive!

Ah I see Sherlock!!!! :). His place is something else, I love the unrestored dust covered array of cars on the mezzanine floor of his place and his collection of restored cars is very nice indeed. A true Mini enthusiast without doubt. It was after my visit that I decided to have him restore my car. I'm amazed at the progress he's made already, although most has been cutting out the rotten panels I guess but still, puts me to shame with regards rate of progress. I've had the (new) rear and (old) front subframes powder coated and am just about to start on the other suspension/brake parts. Bought a small bead blast cabinet so will do these myself and paint rather than powder coat.

Looking good keep up the hard work ~are you planning on showing it autotests?
I had a string of 4 minis in the early 80's ending up with a rally spec 1293 ~alloy cage ,alloy doors, alloy flywheel, kent 286 full race head, sidedraft dellorttos FZD's , LCB exhaust manifold and system 10.5" solid discs from an F3 car and 13" compomotives ~stil got a shed full of bits
stuck to the road like glue but would shake your filling's out at 105 tuts and only did 20 mpg ~less than the series II land rover it replaced

Above one is mini-legend Peter Baldwin at KH about 3 years ago - amazing to watch a pensioner drift a mini pin-point perfectly every corner!

Good luck with the project Robin. Have sent my Dad the URL for this thread as he has a 1972 Cooper and needs a bit of prompting to allow his dream to come to fruition. He's after a vtec'd FWD or bike engined RWD conversion ( er....perhaps not in line with your goal w.r.t restoration) but has never got beyond the research stage. MOT floor pan issues were the first hurdle. I am hoping that seeing your car unfold will give him a helping hand / catalyst. Keep the pics coming and sack the money pit element.......life is for living !

Thank's Cal,

Any Mini kept on the road is a worthwhile exercise whether original/modified so tell your dad to make the move on his. I have to admit that farming out the bodywork feels like a cop out but it would have taken me years and it would never have been done to the quality of workmanship that Iain has applied to mine (I've never had the time to really get into doing bodywork unfortunately). I'll still get a lot of satisfaction from doing the mechanical work, especially putting it all back together again. I stopped worrying about the cost ages ago, I'll never get back what it'll cost but so what, I'll have a car that I know 100% that makes it worth it to me anyway. Let us know if your dad starts his project, and post up some pic's of the car as it is now if possible,
Robin
