I think a lot of people know this already, but I look after the routing, ivrs and telephony reporting for BskyB.

So my stuff allows these happy people

to speak to these less than happy people

Basically from when you call an 08442 number all the way through the IVRs (press one for this, two for that) until you get to speak to an agent then it's all my domain.

Sorry in advance

Did you do an Optoelectronics degree? I started my Optoelectronics and laser engineering degree at Heriot-Watt in '98 at the height of the telecomms boom- by the time I graduated the telecoms market was on it's arse.

Luckily after doing an MSc I got a job in the laser engineering side of things.

I now make the laser designators for these;

F-16
Image

Harrier
Image

F-35 JSF

amongst others.

I started out designing and building prototypes for the Laser used in the Sniper Advanced Targeting Pod which is used on some F-16s and the Harrier among others.

When we got a large order to build them I moved over to the production team to assist for six months- five years later I'm still in the production team.

I have also worked on the laser used for the F35 which is essentially the same as the ATP laser but with some subtle alterations as the pod is more integrated into the aircraft.

I currently work on the laser for the Litening G4 pod which is used on some F-16s, Typhoons and Tornados I believe.

I am in the same game as most on here. In a 'wear many hats role'. I wish I could post some of the stuff we are working on at the minute but I can't (new technology). The cool part of my job is that I get to use various well simulation software to help with job planning / making cool reports. Hopefully by mid 2012 I can post up with pics.

I guess you work at Selex then! :)

I did a full time HND in Electronics & Communications while working at GEC-Plessey Telecoms which later become part of Marconi.

Moved to Scotland in 2000 at the height of the telecoms bubble to join an optical start-up in Livingston that was developing planar lightwave circuits; basically processing light on a silicon chip! Worked with a lot of people who had been either at BAe (as was!) or Heriot-Watt. The start-up was bought and sold several times (I lost count!); now working for one of those companies on photonic subsystems that route, switch & amplify optical signals around the world, without which you wouldn't be reading SE! :)
