If you don't have access to a ramp to check this, Driving in circles will make the fronts run wide if the haldex isn't working.

There is also a slow speed method to test the Haldex...........Lifted from Haldex

Mechanical Function-test of the Haldex coupling.

- Rollout in circle

Aim: Check the function of the coupling and the response on the car. Is to be done on level ground.

1. Drive in circle with minimum turning radius at a speed of about 10 km/h.
Disengage the clutch and close the throttle.
Let the car roll to full stop.

2. Drive in circle with minimum turning radius at same speed as in case 1.
Disengage the clutch and run up the engine to 3000 - 4000 rpm.
Let the car roll to full stop.

* If the coupling is working the car will stop in about half the distance in case 2 compared with case 1.

* If there is no difference in the two cases there is a malfunction of the coupling. The problem could be caused by the coupling or by missing signals from the car. A further inspection has to be done to be able to determine the cause of the malfunction.

* If a noise from the HLSC is noticed when turning or driving in circles the oil in the coupling is damaged. The damage can be caused by overheating or by water in the oil.

If you access to a ramp...............check it this way

AWD test on car lift. (all wheels free to turn.)

Aim: Check the function and the control of the coupling.

1. Pull the handbrake.
Disengage the clutch.
Start the engine.
Put the gearbox in 2:nd gear.
Let the engine idle.
Engage the clutch.

* Engine is supposed to stop when the clutch is engaged. (HLSC controlled as in handbrake start.) If engine do not stop, disengage the hand brake immediately. Otherwise there is a risk of seriously damage on the HLSC.

2. Disengage the handbrake.
Disengage the clutch and start the engine
Put the gearbox in 2:nd gear.
Let the engine idle.
Engage the clutch. At least one front wheel and one rear wheel is supposed to turn.
Pull the handbrake for 2 seconds.

* Front wheel is supposed to turn while the rear wheels are supposed to stop when the brake is pulled. Engine is supposed to run all the time. (HLSC controlled as in handbrake turn.) Don't exceed the 2 seconds or repeat the test for more than 5 times during a 5-minute period. Otherwise there is a risk of seriously damage on the HLSC.

Can I get back to work now.............

Hi Stuart, I always fancied an older shape S3 so have a look at what's available every now and again hence the black one on Pistonheads. Had a look at it today, no test drive as battery flat. They have it up for just short of £7k, whatcar valuation for Good Condition is £5,180 so a significant mark up.
Got a copy of the current MOT cert so did an MOT history check @ http://motinfo.direct.gov.uk/internet/j ... equest.jsp
Reg No is SN03 POH and MOT test number is 188351051170, makes interesting reading and gives me the impression that this car has been driven pretty hard with plenty of mention on tyre, brake and suspension issues, example here for MOT failure in May 2010
Reason(s) for refusal to issue Certificate
Nearside Headlamp aim too low
Offside Headlamp aim too low
Nearside Rear Seat belt has a cut which has significantly weakened the webbing (5.2.2a)
Nearside Front Front constant velocity joint gaiter split (2.5.C.1a)
Offside Front Anti-roll bar synthetic mounting deteriorated resulting in excessive movement (2.4.G.2)
Nearside Front Tyre has ply or cords exposed (4.1.D.1b) **DANGEROUS**
Front brakes imbalanced (3.7.A.2d) **DANGEROUS**

Advisory Notice issued
Offside Front Tyre worn close to the legal limit (4.1.E.1)
Rear brake disc worn, pitted or scored, but not seriously weakened (3.5.1i)

It has had an advisory for the last 2 MOTS saying "Front tyres scrubbing" which doesn't seem to have been addressed.
I don't think I'll be taking this one any further.
