Advice needed: Working offshore
I have heard of a few people who have worked on aircraft gasturbines who have gone on to work offshore on the generators on the rigs . I am led to believe there are also a couple of land based overhaulers.RICHARDHUMBLE wrote:Just sat through a presentation by Schluberger, very unimpressed to say the least. The HR manager basically said you'll be fecked about for 2-3 years with no fixed working pattern and no garuantees. Annual salary of £15000 + £40 / day offshore.
You have to relocate to Abz too....

If you want to work on aircraft there was a company at blackpool who recruited ex- airforce , I have a feeling they went bust but I may be wrong . There is also contracting ,I dont know what the fitters rates are like (£12-15 quid an hour when I did it ) if you get a licence and types money is much better .

Rich, I assume that the Schlumberger offer was for a new start with zero experience? I would say that for a service co. that would be about the going rate.
Its not far away from what I am offering to brand new starts.
There is a massive shortfall in resources so finding work shouldnt be too difficult?
All the agencies above and in previous posts are well worth a shot. I find oilcareers.com good.

I don't know anything about the IT world, there seem to be a heap of self employed IT people working through agencies. There are not many IT jobs offshore though, mainly onshore people that sometimes go offshore.
Schlumberger are one of the top paying oil service companies, but you have to earn offshore bonus to get the high salaries. They do work people hard and have some pretty unsympathetic schedules, but if you can take it for a few years I would expect their pay to be better than most. Others to consider Baker, Dril-Quip, Weatherford.
Wood Group service many of the gas turbines used offshore, so if thats what you already know about maybe an option.
